OPOTIKI ROAD DISTRICT BOARD.

A mkktino was held on Thursday, August 1. Present: Messrs. S. Moody (chairman), A. Parkinson, P. Chapman, J. B. Gow, and J. Appleton. Replies to last month's correspondence were '-cad, discussed, and approved. A letter was received from Mr. K. Talbot asking to have the new road across the Kukumoa Swamp, leading to the beach at Pairata, formed and ditches six feet wide made, in which case he would give such portion of his land as would lie required for the completion of such road where it passes through his property. Mr. Gow proposed, Mr. Parkinson, That a letter be written to Mr. Talbot in reply to his, to the effect that the Board is willing to have the road surveyed at once, but the funds will not permit of its construction at present." Carried. A letter was received from Messrs. A. and hi. Graham and G. P. Matchctt calling attention to the bad state of the road leading to Mr. Graham's farm at Waiotahi. Resolved, "That Mr. Chapman be authorised to arrange with Mr. Graham to do this road work for i' 3, in accordance with his former offer, failing which that he (Mr. Chapman) be authorised to make other arrangements for the completion of this portion of the road." A letter was received from Mr. A. M. Ross stating that he is unable to procure a copy of the Land Act, ISXS, but enclosing a written copy of the sections bearing upon the expenditure of deferred payment thirds. A letter was received from Mr. Thomas Humphries, Crown Lands Commissioner, describing what roads deferred payment money may be spent upon and what kind of plan's are to be supplied with the application for the Commissioner's sanction. A telegram was received from Mr. A. M. Ross asking what the total expenditure on Chapman's Road from junction southwards was. The subject was fully discussed. Messrs. Gow, Appleton, _ and Parkinson were appointed a sub-committee to inspect the road-grader on its arrival, with power to accept or decline it at their discretion. Mr. Litchfield reported the result of the visit of inspection of the inland portion of the main Tableland road, describing certain portions needing improving and grading. Mr. A. Parkinson reported the result of his inspection of the embankment leading to Mr. Steele's deferred payment section, stating that the pipes are not laid on the lowest level, and that a fresh has carried away part of the small embank- ( ment, and that some water has been backed upon Mr. Gordon's land. Resolved, "That abetter be written to Mr. Gordon informing him that whenever he has his drain formed the pipes in the embankment shall be shifted so as to carry the flow of the ditch through the embankment." Resolved, "That a

Maxwell informing him that the Board is of opinion t hat the far end of the Tableland road is in more immediate need of formation and repairs than those portions pointed out bv htm." Mr. Chapman thought that the Board should now consider whether, in view of the many important roadworks urgently requiring attention, it would be advisable to strike a three-farthing rate for the current year instead of a halfpenny rate, as formerly. Mr. Parkinson proposed, Mr. Appleton seconded, '• That a rate of one halfpenny in the pound be struck for the current year." Carried. Mr. Cow proposed, Mr. Moody seconded, "That the clerk prepare an agreement for 32 months' advertising at Gd per inch, and present it to .
