PARLIAMENT.

LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. Wednesday. The Council met at 2.30 p.m. FIRST READINGS. The following Bills were read a first time:—Act to amend the Savings Bank Act, 1858 ; an Act to Provide for the Payment by the Public Trustee of Certain Moneys received by him on Account of the Auckland and Onehunga Native Hosteiries to the Account of the Civil List for Native Purposes ; an Act to amend the Offences Against the Person Act. MISCELLANEOUS. The Native Meetings Bill was read a third time, and passed. The Native Land Court Act Amendment Bill was committed, and reported with amendments. The amendments made by the House of Representatives to the Public Reserves Act Amendment Bill were carried after division j by 14 to 10. The Queenstown Athenaeum Bill was committed, and passed. The Council rose at 3.35 till to-morrow.

HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. W KDNEXDAY. The House met at 2.30 p.m. ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS. Replying to questions. Ministers said they would consider a proposal to allow readdressed letters to be sent free ; the Government would reserve mining areas within the land reserved for the Midland Railway Company when the Company applied for their area. Mr. Guinness moved the adjournment of the House to discuss tho question, urging that the House should know what reserves the Government intended making. After some discussion the motion for adjournment was last. CAUSES OK DEPRESSION. In reply to a question, it was stated that the Government had no inteution of appointing a select committee to inquire into tho causes of depression. HILLS INTRODUCED. The following Bills were introduced :— Bankruptcy Bill, Public Works Act Amendment Bill, Public Schools Bill, a Bill to amend tho Ti mam High School Act IS7S Amendment Act, 1882. THE EXODUS. Mr. Moss moved the adjournment of tho House to call attention to the exodus now taking place in the colony, and which the Government should take some means to step. The discussion was interrupted by the 5.30 adjournment. The House resumed at 7.30. ORDER OK BUSINESS. On tho motion for going into committee on tho Imprest Supply Bill, Mr. Ballanck asked what business tho Government intended going on with ? Sir 11. Atkinson said he would make a statement in a few days on the subject. IMPREST SUPPLY. An Imprest Supply Bill for £200,000 was passed through all stages. TRIENNIAL LICENSING RILE. On the motiou of Mr. Fergus, the amendments made by the Legislative Council in the Triennial Licensing Bill were agreed to by 54 to 23. WI PKRE LAND GRANT. Mr. Richardson* moved the second reading of the Wi Pere Land Grant Bill, which [ authorised a grant of land to Wi Pere in I satisfaction of certain claims. Agreed to. MERCANTILE LAW. The Mercantile Law Act Amendment Bill passed through Committee without amendment. PROTECTION OF ANIMALS. On the motion for the commital of the Animals Protection Amendmout Bill, Mr. Mackenzie (Waihemo) moved that the Bill be read that day three months. The amendment was lost by 46 to 23, and the Bill was committed. Clause 5 was amended to the effect that no person shall kill or shoot with any gun at any game or native game exceeding ten pounds in weight. The clause providing that, no person be allowed to shoot game on his own land was, on the motion of Mr. J. McKenzie, struck out. Clauses S and y were also struck out. Mr. Duncan moved a new clause requiring every holder of a license to sell game to keep a book in which to record particulars of any game ho may purchase, and the district where it was shot. Agreed to. Mr. Taipua moved a new clause, which was agreed to, fixing the season for shooting curlew during the months of February, March, and April. The Bill was then reported with amendments, read a third time, and passed. BILLS PASSED. The Mercantile Law Amendment Bill and the Shipping and Seamen's Act Amendment Bill were read a third time and passed. The House rose at 11.50 p.m.
