THE CRETAN REVOLT.

London, August 8. A party of Mahommedans shot an Italian soldier dead outside of Candia. The Italian Government have ordered a warship to proceed and demand satisfaction. The Christian majority in the Cretan Assembly are arming against the Mahommedans, who are leading the revolt. Greece lias sent a formal note, threatening to interfere unless order is restored, and the Greek fleet has been ordered to be in readiness to proceed to Crete. The English Government, replying to the note, discourages any action being taken. Turkey declines to agree to mediation, and Kiamil Pasha, the Grand Vizier, has made a demand on Greece for an explanation of her note to the Powers. Constantinople, August 9. The Porte has issued a proclamation declaring Crete to be in a state of siege. The Powers have replied to the note from Greece, and given an assurance that they will quell the insurrection in Crete.
