RAILWAY TRAIN FACILITIES FOR TEAVELLING.

A considerable amount of discontent has been evoked respecting the proposed alteration in the running of the morning train from Mercer to Auckland. The proposed change comes into force on Monday first, unless a change is made between now and then. Yesterday forenoon Mr. Lambe, of Manurewa, and others presented a petition to Mr. Hudson, district traffic manager, on the subject. The petition wns largely signed, copies having been placed at Manurewa, Papakura, and Papaboetoe for signature, and is as follows :— To C. Hudson, Esq., District Railway Traffic Manager, Auckland : Sir,We, the undersigned, understand that after a. certain date it is proposed by the railway authorities that the morning train from Mercer to Auckland, which at present arrives in Auckland at 9.30 a.m., shall be so timed that it will arrive at 10.15 a.m. The alteration appears to us to bo an inconvcr nicnce for two reasons. First, because persons travelling by that train to attend the markets will not have sufficient opportunity to examine the goods previous to the sales ; and secondly, because it will be too late for children from the country attending the Auckland schools. If, however, it is thought best that the train should leave Mercer at the time proposed, then we respectfully suggest either that the speed should be increased, so that the train should reach Auckland earlier, or, if that is not possible, then that the train which at present leaves Otahuhu at 8.15 a.m. should he allowed to go up the line, say as far as Papakura, passing Otahuhu as at present. Either of the methods would, they consider, be to the advantage of the public. Wc wish further to remark that the settlers signing this letter use the train much oftencr than those living at a greater distance, and that th«same remark is true also as to school children and young people learning businesses.
