Messrs. .Scales and Co., 9, Fenchurch-streefc, London, report at April i: — Wool.The April-May series of auctions commenced on the 2nd instant, with a Urge attendance of both home and foreign buyers rind a spirited competition. About 7400 bales were offered, and the biddings were animated and strong, particularly for wools of good staple and quality, showing nn advance of fully Jd per lb mi merino descriptions of Australian greasy and scoured, and Id on tine cros-sbreds, the lower kinds heing without any alteration. The improvement was continued at yesterday's sale, prices being stronger for all descriptions. TaLLOW, which has been more or less depressed during the past month, has of late shown some signs of improvement, and there i-< now a fair, though not active, demand at slightly advancing prices. We quote : — Good to tlnost mutton, 20s to •>lh ; fair to finest beef, 25s 6d to 20s 6d. Hiuks.—For ox and cow-hides the market is again dull, and prices are about |d per lb lower than hist month. Heavy ox, 3}d per 11); cow, 2jd to3J(l. —Sheepskin.-i in fair demand at about late rates. Jtabbit: The market is firm, and a fairly pood trade is doing at about late rates. Kauh.l GUM shows a (lull trade, without material alteration in values, except for dark K'>>ni, which is cheaper. Selected transparent, clean, is quoted at £10 to £15 per CWt; fine selected, £0 15s to £10 per ewt ; good half-scraped, 58s to 65s per cwt. iMOTIIEK-O'-PEAKL SHELLS.—Very littlo business doing, pending sales to commence on 9th instant. Nominal values for West Australian, £5 5s to £« 15's West Australian chicken, £<j 10s to £7 12s 6u ; and Auckland, £3 to £4 ss. BEESWAX is in fair demand. Fair to good Australian, £6 Ids to £0 per cwt. Xkw Zealand Hemp.—After last report the demand fell off, and prices declined somewhat, but considerable quantities have changed hands at about our quotations: Pair to good (Wellington), £35 to £37 per ton ; Auckland (scarce), £30 to Cii per ton. Manilla and other hemps are very dull, and any attempt to force sales would probably cause a drop in values.
