COMMERCIAL.

New Zealand Herald Office. Saturday afternoon. Business during the past four ■weeks has been of the usual character, except that a few large transactions have taken place in lines which have been imported from the other side on account of stocks hero running low through non-arrival of expected parcels from home. Generally speaking a fair volume of business has been done at satisfactory rates, some lines being scarce advanced prices have been asked for and obtained. ( , The Centennial litis made her first trip under the Ellis Hag, and on account of the competition in freights importers have received some concessions in rates which will help intercolonial trade. '1 he 'lax industry still claims considerable attention, wild we hear of new mills starting in various places. It is to be hoped millers will pay careful attention to quality, and not allow a desire for increased production to spoil the opportunity they now have of making this industry one of great benefit to the colony. The half-yearly meeting of the shareholders of the Bank of New Zealand has been held during the month, and on the whole the balance-sheet must be considered satisfactory. With the improved prospects of the colony the directors will be enabled more readily to realise the lauded securities which have fallen into the hands of the Bank. The increase in the export trade of the colonv is remarkable. The exports from Auckland during the quarter ended .'Hat March exceed those of the corresponding quarter of ISSS by £70,073 ; and, if the average value of the first quarter is sustained so far as the entire exports of the colony are concerned, the total value for the year ending 1880 will be nearly £14,000,000. The Kauri Timber Company has during the month despatched from one of its Kaipara mills a shipment of kauri to Glasgow, an entirely new outlet. Upon the success of this venture further shipments will no doubt largely depend. But, as the timber has been carefully selected, it is almost sure to meet with a favourable reception, seeing that the qualities of our kauri are eminently suitable for this market. For mullet a strong demand continues, which canners are unable to overtake owiug to the present scarcity of the fish. During the month only comparatively few have been caught. Wire nails selling slowly. The market is well supplied. Sugar : Business has been large. Prices are likely to continue high. A large parcel of low-value China whites was sold in s.s. Tarawera's hold for delivery South at a price withheld. The Colonial Sugar Company have advanced their price 10s per ton. Tea : The usual sorting-tip lines have been wanted, with good inquiry for cheap boxes. Oatmeal is in good demand, and the price is firm. Tobacco : The market is almost bare of Derby. Venus and Mazcppa are, however, selling freely, and are considered fairly satisfactory substitutes. Column's starch continues scarce. We understand that a parcel has been placed to arrival in a few days. Berber's in 51b packets is being offered from the South. Candles are selling freely, the enquiry being chiefly due to the approach of winter. A considerable quantity of kerosene is being placed, on account of winter trade. The high freights from New York will have the effect of keeping prices up. The Elinor Vernon has arrived at Wellington with supplies, and will come on to this port on discharge of Southern portion of cargo. Of coffee a good deal is selling. The legitimate value of rice is at least 30s to 40s per ton more titan we understand parcels from Sydney have been offered at. Outside importers have brought large shipments down to that market, and merchants there being fully supplied, low offers have been made to New Zealand buyers to induce business.

Sago and tapioca are firm at our last quotations.

Of orb iron, a good parcel has been quitted ex Centennial, at a price in buyer's favour.

Arrivals of coarse and fine salt just to band per Centennial will meet present wants. This article is firm, and likely to remain so for a time.

The market bare of stocks in castor oil and turpentine. A line of the latter has been placed during the week. fencing wire and cement arc scarce at the moment, with fair quantities to arrive early. Maize, .Ss to 3s 2d. All parcels arriving are sold freely, ex wharf, at these prices. The local market is barely supplied. Of wheat, the local farmers are still shipping rather than accept prices offered locally, and Auckland samples, if prime, are selling freely in Australia. Southern Tuscan landed here is worth 4s Cd, and other varieties 4s 3d.

Fowl wheat is 3s 9d. The demand is limited.

Oats, locals 2s Gd to 3s, according to sample; Southern, bright heavy feed, 3s 2d; discoloured, 3s to 3s Id. The market is firm. Potatoes, locals, £4 2s Gd ; Southern £4 15s.

Bran and pollard are firmer. In the local produce market the price of the best dairy butter remains at Is per lb wholesale and Is 3d per lb retail. Eggs have fallen to la 9d per dozen wholesale and 2s per dozen retail. This price is for full weight; small eggs will command less. Messrs. Nelson Brothers (Limited), Hastings, telegraphed on Thursday :—Our London house cables : The frozen mutton market is firm at 4£d to 4|d per lb. 'The beef market is depressed. Hindquarters, 'Id per lb, and forequarters, 3id. The most noticeable feature in our local kauri gum market is the continuous diminution of supplies. For first four months of this year supplies were 700 tons less than for corresponding period last year. For current month there is no appearance of supplies reaching within ISO tons of May, 1888, and it is anticipated that first half of 1889 there will be a shortage of from 900 tons to JOOO tons as compared with last year, and not improbably 1500 tons difference in the year's supply as compared with last year. Some of the buyers are holding back for winter gum, now due, but this market is at present pretty bare, and prices fully maintained for anything offered, and there are signs of a tendency upward. The Abie! Abbott will sail about 'Jlst mat., with about 450 tons, for New

York, to be followed by the Essex; and for London the Pleiades has cleared with about 300 lons. Supplies from mail to mail are about 427 tons. We quote :—Poor ordinary, 30s; fair ordinary, 31s to 325; best ordinary, 33s ; East Coa,'t,*42s to 435. SALES BY AUCTION. May 6. At Messrs. AUCKLAND STOCK AND SHARE LIST. Business during the past month has been quiet, but a slightly better tone has prevailed. There is plenty of money for investment, but capitalists are showing hesitation in the investment of money ; insurance and bank stocks are the most favoured. Copious rains have fallen throughout the colony,

much needed by farmers. The timber mills also benefit by a supply of kauri logs, brought down the creeks by freshes. The future prospects of business are very encouraging, as the prices of our produce—such as Stain, flax, etc.—seem likely to be maintained. BANKS.—New Zealand Banks have improved In price since the declaration of the dividend of seven per cent. The chairman's report to the shareholders gave great satisfaction, and augurs well for the future prosperity of the Bank. Colonial and National Banks are firm, and And ready buyers at market rates. Insurance. Business has been good. Advanced prices have been paid in many cases, notably in the New Zealand and Union Co.'s shares. Gas.There is very little change to record in these stocks. The market for Auckland gas is steady. Miscellaneous.— Parcels of Loan and Mercantile have changed hands at market rates. A slight improvement has taken place in Land Mortgage shares on last month's prices. National Mortgage remain (inn. Mosgiel Woollen and Wosiport Coal shares are inquired for. Kauri Timber shares find more favour with the public; buyers are coming into the market at low rates. Mining.—A brisk business has been done in several stocks, the Saxon being the lion of the hour. It may be opportune to mention that this mine was offered for sale in London some two years ago, and, luckily for shareholders, the sale was not completed. The Saxon paid another dividend of fid this month. All other mines at the Thames. Coromandel, and Upper Thames gold fields are engaged in steady, useful work, and may be rewarded at any timo by discoveries of gold. The following list shows the rise and fall of the market in the different stocks :—
