COUNTRY NEWS.
[BY TELEGRAPH.OWN CORRESPONDENTS.] Hamilton, Friday. A meeting of the original trustees of the Hamilton Public and Volunteers' Hall was held to-day, at the office of Mr. O'Neill, solicitor. Present: Lieut.-Colonel Shepherd, Captain M. Steele, Messrs. Samuel Steele, William McGregor Hay, and the Mayor of Hamilton; Messrs. O'Neill and Knox, the guarantors of the Bank overdraft, were also present. Mr. Coates, the Mayor, presided. The following resolution was proposed by Mr. Hay, seconded by Captain Steele, and carried, " That a statement in detail of the financial condition be audited and forwarded to the Government, accompanied by a suggestion that the Government take over the hall on behalf of the volunteers, paying the guarantors £313 7s, and the charge, £75, and agreeing to "rant to the borough of Hamilton, an endowment in land of the value of £150, in lieu of the public interest therein. Captain Steele then moved, "That Colonel Shepherd, Mr. Hay, and the Mayor be a committee to carry out the objects of the above resolution, two to form a quorum." This was seconded by Mr. S. Steele, and carried. It was further agreed, "That Mr. John Knox continues the management of the hall as before until a further resolution of the trustees be come to, all lighting and cleaning fees to be paid beforehand." Mr. Carthy, one of the local militia settled at Hamilton, and who served in the Imperial army, died last night. A military funeral is to be accorded him.
