LORd ONSLOWS MOVEMENTS.

Yesterday forenoon Lord Onslow accorded an interview to ' Mr. T. ;B. Hannaford, respecting his 'Beacon lighthouse. Mr, ; Hannaford had the model and drawings of the Hannaford Light in readirie3ss in one of the rooms, and at once proceeded to explain them to, His Excellency. . From . the questions which. His Lordship asked respecting the invention, it was evident that he had a full grasp sof the scheme. Lord Onslow said he understood that the Colonial Government had promised to introduce the. invention in 'New Zealand waters, and. .he intimated to Mr. Hannaford that when that event came about, and he found it was a success, he would have great pleasure in giving him a warm letter of recommendation. Mr. Hannaford could then forward it to his friend Lord Brassey for 'presentation to the Lords of the Admiralty. The interview then terminated, Mr. Hanna-. ford thanking His Excellency for his cour-, teous attention to the explanation he had furnished. At a later period of the day Mr. Hannaford received the following letter : —"The Grand Hotel, Prinoes-street, Auckland, April 23, 1889. Sir,—l am directed by His Excellency the Earl of Onslow to thank you for explaining to him the model of your invention for a lighthouse to be supplied with electric light by means of a windmill. His .Excellency was greatly-interested in the invention, and should one of these lighthouses be eventually erected on the coast of New Zealand, hopes to have an opportunity of seeing the apparatus actually at work.—Believe me, yours faithfully, R. . Stewart Savile, A.D.C." . .

Yesterday afternoon Lord Onslow and Lady Onslow,- accompanied by Captain Savile, A.D.C., and the Hon.'E. Mitchelson (Minister of Public Works), took a drive to the top of Mount' Eden. On arrival there Mr. Mitch pointed out the various points of interest on the Auckland isthmus lying. at the feet of the viceregal party. The day was beautifully clear, and the line of the East and West Coasts, as well as the islands studding the Hauraki Gulf and the Firth of the Thames, could be clearly seen. Lord and Lady Onslow expressed themselves as simply charmed with the grand panorama of land and sea, mountain and plain, stretched out before them. Mr.' Mitchelson then took them through the Remuera, district, down the Ladies' Mile, into Green Lane, and past the olive plantations on the estate of Dr. J. L." Campbell, One-Tree Hill, to Epsom, where Lord Onslow had to lay the foundationstone of the Home for the Aged. Lord Onslow expressed his great gratification at the fine views seen during the drive. Lord Onslow was entertained to dinner last evening at the Northern Club. There were about. GO members present. Dr. J. Logan Campbell (president) presided, and Mr. Jas. Russell- (vice-president) occupied the vice-chair. '' Lord Onslow and Sir Fred. Whitaker were on the right of the chair, and Captain Frederick, of H.M.s. Dart, on the . left. The chairman proposed the toast of " The Queen," which was duly honoured, after which, in an v effective speech, he gave the toast of " The Health of Lord Onslow, Lady Onslow, and Family," ■which was drunk with enthusiasm, and to which His Excellency responded in appropriate terms. : : Impey's Band played some choice musical selections during the evening. Lord and Lady Onslow will leave to-day at 11 o'clock by special train for the Lake country, and it is understood will put up for. the night at Okoroire Hot Springs, near Oxford. He will be accompanied to the railway station by His Worship the Mayor. '
