The above match, played by the combined teams of Hokianga, took place on the Paktuie cricket ground, and resulted in a hard-won victory for Pakia and Herd's Point by five runs. By the even scoring on both sides, it was evident .that the bowling, which was dead on the 'wicket, was too good for the batting. For the former team Nathan came off as top scorer with 14 runs, and for the latter G. F. Webster had his usual luck as top scorer for 20 runs. The following are the scores :—

TAIRUA V. MERCURY BAY. On Saturday last two cricket matches were played between the Tairua Men's and Boys' Clubs and the Mercury Bay Men's and Boys, being the return matches of the season. The three last contests between the seniors were won by the Bay teams, but last Saturday's contest was an easy victory for Tairua, to the great astonishment of the visitors, who, I understand, felt quite certain of carrying away the ball. The Mercury Bay senior team was captained by Mr. Clay, manager of the mills at the Bay, and the Tairua team was handled by Mr. A. O. Field, captain of the club. Play commenced at eleven o'clock, the visitors taking the willows first, represented by Messrs. Clay and Edmonds. H. Bennett and J. Barnett were put on to bowl, both of whom soon showed that they were in good form. Edmonds' wicket fell to one of Bennett's with 1 run to his credit. Schofield taking his place for a short and merry life. Burton next acknowleged Bennett's style by going out with a duck's egg. Three wickets for the same number of runs. M. O'Connor was the next man, who added 5. T. McGregor then went in, and made a better show, be evidently being up to Bennett's balls, and took 14 runs before he sudcuinbed to Bennett, Mr. Clay adding to the score with S runs, O'Neil being the only other of the visitors who added anything in the first innings. For Tairua Smith and J. Bradby went in first, the score running up rapidly to 15, Bradby making 10, when lie was caught by Edmonds, and Wilson, taking his bat, only added one to the score. Barnett then joined Smith, and, between them, brought up the numbers to '27. The next man did nothing. Heath then went in and added 16. The remaining men only added 4—Smith having run his score up to 17—the Tairua team retiring with 59 to their credit. Clay, Burton, and Schofield were the bowlers, and each averaged four wickets. The visitors' second innings was marked by several duck eggs. McGregor scored 14, Clay 8, O'Connor 5, with 4 to the credit of the rest of the men, which, with 5 byes, gave them, as the first innings, 36, the game standing 76 against 59. Cordes and Moore then went in for Tairua, Moore making seven runs, and Cordes, with the next man, run up the required number to win for Tairua with nine wickets to spare. On leaving the ground the usual compliments were exchanged, Mr. Clay calling for three extra cheers for the ladies of Tairua. In the evening a dance was given in the hall, to which all the visitors were invited. In the boys' match the visitors were also bested, the Tairua lads having eight wickets to spare. Thus ended the season's cricketing. Whether the Tairua team could bear many more such victories is a query. The first football match is promised for next Saturday.—[Own Correspondent.]
