The gunboat Raven, after having her bunkers wiled alongside ILM.s. Orlando, was towed fcnuik to her anchorage by a large force of brawny bluejackets in nine cutters, aided by the head sails of the vessel. The barque Simeon will probably sail for Newcastle to-day to take in a load of coal there for a foreign port. About 5 o'clock yesterday morning the s.s. Clansman reached port from her Northern trip, bringing a good number of passengers, una the following freight:—IG9 sacks gum, 140 bugs manganese, 12 sacks 11 casks oil, 8 tons iron, 6 sacks fungufe. The barqneutine Jessie will leave probably on Monday to load timber for Sydney either ' at Kaipara or Mercury Bay. The Northern S.S. Co.'s lona arrived from " her weekly crip to the Great Barrier yesterday morning, and in the evening took her departure for Mercury Bay, being fairly patronised in both freight and, passenger departments. Admiral and Mrs. Fairfax yesterday paid a visit to the Orakei native meeting, going down to tho Bay in one of the Orlando tea in launches. Last night the as. Wellington took her departure for Whangarei, with general freight and pa33cngers. At Messrs. Xonk3 and Co.'s mart yesterday the well-known trader Vindex, the erstwhile Auckland pilot schooner, was sold by auction for £200, Mr. James Macfarlane being the purchaser. The Lady Mabel, brigantine, is rapidly putting out her coal at the Hobson-street Wharl for the Auckland Gas Co. At seven o'clock last evening the s.s. Clansman sailed on her weekly trip to Tauranga. The Paris correspondent of the Standard (London) states that a new torpedo boat for submarine warfare, laid down at Toulon on the 30th of April, 1887, and built on the plans of M. Zede, a retired French navy constructor, was recently launched, the operation being carried out in the strictest privacy. This new submarine torpedo boat, called the Gymnote, is nearly 60ft in length between perpendiculars, ana about 6ft beam._ She is provided with Krebs's electric motor of 50 horse power, and other machinery, the latter to be worked by compressed air, and to enable her to emerge or sink as required. Her steering apparatus consists of an ordinary rudder for steering horizontally, and there are other means for steering vertically. Accommodation is provided for one officer,"two engineers, and a seaman.
