WHAKATANE COUNTY COUNCIL
A meeting of this Council was held on Monday, March 11. Present: Messrs. J. B. Gow (chairman), Dr. Pveid, A. Parkinson, and J. Walker. Replies to last month's correspondence were read anil discussed. Te Kohti.—l):-. Reid objected to the sending of telegrams to the Government re Te Kooti's visits as Council telegrams, or at the Council's cost, when these telegrams were decided upon at a public meeting, which was not a legal Council meeting, and desired his protest to be recorded on the minutes against telegrams of that nature beingsent either at the cost of or in the name of the Council without due authority, a Government agent being there for the purpose of keeping Government posted up on all such matters. The Chairman considered that in
cases of emergency it is requisite that discretionary ]lower be left in the hands of tlw Jig county chairman, and that in acquainting " the Government with the state of matters in the district, at the request of a public meeting, he was acting within the limits of such discretionary power. (Ju<j >'i>c. —A letter was received from Mr. 8. Crapp, enclosing a report upon the two Waioeka bridges, stating that certain portions wdre needing immediate repair. These he had attended to already, and that the east wing required entirely renewing and extending to a greater width. Another letter from Mr. Crapp, reporting that Mr. Thomas Parkinson's contract at Waiotahi is satisfactorily completed, also that one of the temporary bridges on the road between the aiotahi Valley Road and the river is broken, and requires immediate repair or a fresh bridge to be erected. Letter received From the clerk of the Whakatane Road Board, enclosing a list of lands sold by that Board for arrears of rates in IKSfj: Resolved, " That the engineer be instructed to call for tenders for the work of erecting the new east ■wings to the main Waioeka bridge, returnable at the next Council meeting, and that a letter be sent to Mr. W. Kelly, M.H.R., asking him to endeavour to obtain a grant for this purpose from the Government." _Mr A. Parkinson and the clerk were authorised toi nspect the broken culvert on the Opotiki"Waiotahi Road, and if found that the repairs required are not excessive, to request Mr. Crapp to have them executed. Letter received from Mr. Edward Clay, chairman Corornandel County Council, ask-' ing the Council to supply a list of rates of wages for surfacemen, with or without drays, etc. Resolved, " That the clerk ascertain as near as possible what authority the Council has over the ferries within the county, with especial reference to the Chiwa one." Accounts.—' following accounts were received and considered :—'l iios. H. Parkinson, contract,Waiotahi Road, £"25 1 fid ; Geo. Croon, repairing bridges, £1 1-ls Md ; C. 1). Litchfield, Returning Oiiicer, £"2'Js; Otakiri Ferry, £> 10s; Mr. Parkinson proposed, and Dr. Reid seconded, " That these accounts be passed for payment." Carried. Messrs. J. J5. Gow and K. P. iHunergue were authorised to receive and pass the usually quarterly accounts at the end of the month, and issue cheques for the payment of the dame. Reaolved, " That a letter be written to the Marine Department, asking for a reply to Council's letter re, powers to levy wharf dues on Ohiwa Wharf."—[Own Correspondent.]
