KAITAIA SHOW.

The Kaitaia Agricultural Show was held on Friday, .March 15, and a splendid collection of first-class fruits, vegetables, &c., was shown. Of live stock there were more than double the nnmber that were exhibited last year, while at least four times as many people were present. Unfortunately, the hundreds of exhibits sent in were more than the committee expected or were prepared for, and a room four times the size was needed to show them properly ; consequently, instead of the show being opened at two o'clock, as was intended, the judges had not completed the awarding of the prizes till five o'clock, when many visitors, tired out with waiting, had gone home, thinking little and caring less for the exertions made and trouble taken by the committee and stewards, who did all in their power to make the show a success, which it might have been if those who grumbled so energetically had only given a little help. Those sottlers who waited and saw the show were well repaid for their patience. No one had any idea that so many settlers had at last began to grow vegetables. The executive committee had arranged to have the annual meeting of the subscribers at four o'clock, and had made arrangements to have the successful exhibits" sent to Auckland for exhibition there, with a view to calling attention to the capabilities of the Kaitaia district, Mr. Wylos, of jMangonni, having kindly promised to forward them by the Clansman freight free. The delay prevented the holding of the meeting, so a grand opportunity for advertising our neglected district was lost. The village settlement of Takahue came well to the front, carrying off the £1 prizo for the best half-bushel of oats in the show, the first prize for tukaus (sweet potatoes), swedes, mangolds, carrots, cabbages, tomatoes, sugar corn, kidney and haricot beans, and several second and third prizes. The cruet-stand given by Messrs. E. Porter and Co. for tho best collection of cakes, tarts, &c., went to Mrs. Muir ; and the half-guinea for the best collection of artificial llowers was awarded to Miss Bradley, both of Takahuo. Only one village settler came over from the Herckino settlement (Mr. Vercoe), but ho rode off with the first prizes for parsnips, potato onions, and beetroot. His success may induce others to try next year. The Oruru Valley settlers sent a very nice lot of exhibits, Mr. Wilkinson taking the £1 prize for best half-bushel of wheat (spring), and first prize for dessert apples, rockmelons, pumpkins, tares, horse beans, and field peas. The Misses Lambly also bore off the handsome papier-machie stand given by Messrs. Macky, Logan, Steen, and Co. for the best collection of ladies' fancy work. The other first prizes that went to Oruru Valley were for bread, plums, cucumbers, fowls, broom corn, &c., and more than a dozen second and thirdclass prizes. Of the Kaitaia settlers, H. S. Masters was again the largest prizetaker, winning the silver cup for best ram, the silver prize for the best bull, the first prize for winter wheat, and many other first and second prizes. Messrs. H. B. and E. Matthews and E. Subritzkey were a good second and third. The cattle were much better than had ever been shown before, but much better accommodation must be provided for the next show, as it is unreasonable to expect the judges to decide on the merits of stock running loose in a paddock. Noxt time pens should be provided for cattle, as they have been for the sheep, and thus one source of complaint will oc done away with. Since the hist donations to the show fund were acknowledged Messrs. Wilsons and Horton have kindly offered one year's subscription to the Auckland Weekly News as a special prize; Mr. J. C. Firth has given 3001b of flour and five bags of gerraina; and the Kauri Timber Company have sent a lot of timber for hurdles, which the Northern Steamship Company have generously brought to the Awanui freight free.

After t.he show the judges and visitors had dinner at the Redan Hotel, Mr. T. W. P. Smith, president of the association, in the chair. Some of the Oruru farmers proposed that the Kaitaia Association should be amalgamated with one that is about to be formed at Oruru, and advocated that .a show should be held at Oruru and Kaitaia in alternate years. The general idea of the Kaitains is that it would be better if the Oruru folks would hold a spring show in November, at which both districts could exhibit, leaving the autumn show, as at present, for Kaitaia. If, however, a meeting of the Oruru farmers were held, and definite proposals sent to the committee of the Kaitaia Association, satisfactory arrangements might easily be made. PRIZE LIST.
