De. Hock eh is visiting various places in the Bay of Islands district. There was one prisoner in the lock-np last night, on a charge of drunkenness. Matthews, the ex-champion boxer, has been giving exhibitions of his skill in Marlborough lately. A house-to-house inspection was made at Wellington recently, under'the Inspector of Nuisances, at a coat of £163. A criminal summons has been taken out by the Wellington police against Mrs. Thorpe, for abortion. The annual rowing contest between the Napier and Gisborne Clubs was won by the Napier crew by three lengths The settlors at Patatahi, Poverty Bay, gave a feast to the Ngatiporou contingent who had been out after Te Kooti. A meeting is to be held at Russell for the purpose of taking steps to have the district represented at the Dunedin Exhibition. The Dunedin Benevolent trustees have appointed an inspector to inquire into the circumstances of all applicants for relief, at a salary of £120 per annum. At a quarter to four p.m. yesterday, Captain Edwin advised : —" Indications strong north to east and south-east winds with rain after twelve hours from now, and glass falling."' We regret to learn that Mr. Emanuel Bayly, of Pihama', who met with an accident- some months ago, has again been thrown out of a buggy, his injured leg putTering severely. The following subscriptions, on behalf of William Skelton. armourer's mate of H.M.s. Lizard, were received at the Herald office yesterday : — Mr. and Mrs. Birrell, Mount Eden, 2s 6d each : H.8.M., 10s. The s.s. Takaiinna had an exceedingly rough passage from Nelson on her last trip, the vessel, however, behaving in a manner that even drew forth laudations and expressions of surprise from her experienced jkinper, Captain Wheeler. With the exception of an odd one hero and there, the whole of the posts for the electric light have been erected in Wellington. A highly ornamental iron lamp-post is now on its way out from England. It will be erected in the vicinity of Martin's fountain, Lambton Quay, and will carry an incandescent lamp of 500 candle-power. The New Zealand Times, in noticing the arrival at Wellington of the Rev. Charles Spurgeon. says "He looked the picture ©f rude health. He bears very litte resemblance to his twin-brother, the Rev. Thomas Spurgeon, of Auckland, who is of a thin spare build. Charles is much after his father in appearance, broad-shouldered, with the neck and face of a gladiator. A woman named Annie Lenihan was brought down from Helensville yesterday by Constable Foreman, who had found her wandering about up there, and believed her to be of unsound mind. The const-able had a great deal of trouble in getting her down to town. She will be brought up for medical examination, with a view to her committal to the Lunatic Asylum. The Rev. Mr. Isitt was announced to lecture at Nelson .a few days ajro on "Dr. Norman McLeod." Mr. Isitt, when he was to begin, explained that he would have to trust more to his memory than he liked in delivering his lecture, as on the way over to Nelson from Blenheim he had lost the notes trhich he had prepared.
