STRANGE OCCURRENCE AT LYTTELTON.
[BY TELEGRAPH.PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Christciiorch, Wednesday. A strange occurrence is reported from Lyttelton. At half-past nino last night two seamen observed a man apparently carrying a swag across the railway lines from the hills side, and deliberately walk over the edge of the wharf into the sea. They ran to the spot and saw a man in the water. They called to him, but met with no response, and a few minutes after ho sank from sight. The night watchmen and men obtained a boat, and searched tho locality, but in vain. This morning tho police, after dragging for more than an our, recovered a ounclle containing a number of old and worthless articles of clothing, etc., and a Bible. In this was written "David Preeze, County Down, Ireland," and two other addresses : "Dalton, in Furness," and "Pihama, Waimate Plains." The name is unknown to tho police here. The body has since been recovered.
