SOUTH FRANKLIN AGRICULTURAL SHOW.

Tnip South Franklin Agricultural Society were favoured with brilliant weather for ! their annual show, which was held yesterday on tho usual grounds at Pukekohe. There wad a large and representative attendance; in fact, the largest that has attended since the inauguration of tho society. Mr. James Rutherford, the president, was one of the most painstaking officials on the field, for he kept the run ot every thing, and ho was ably assisted in his duties by Mr. Proude, ana Mr. Chad wick, the secretary, gave every possible facility for carrying out the meeting successfully. The class stewards appointed were : —For blood stock and light horses, Messrs. Sharp, Proude, McNeish, Barriball; draught stock, Messrs. W. Roulston, R. McCracken ; cattle, Messrs. Potter, Jas. Comrie; sheep and pigs, Messrs. F. L. Wright, J. Johns; dairy produce, Major Harris ; poultry and dogs, Messrs. Shipherd. Finlay; fruit and flowers, Messrs. Gunson and McDonald ; vegetables and seeds, Messrs. Webster and Roulstou; implements, Mr. Shipherd. Colours worn by officers : Judges, pink and white; stewards, blue and white. The judges were : For draught stock, Messrs. Jas. Wallace and Belcher ; cattle, Messrs. F. Lawry and 'Bainbridge ; sheep and pigs, Messrs. Jas. Runciman and W. Westney; dogs and poultry, Messrs. W. F. Buckland and Win. Hall; dairy produce, Messrs. Potter and Wm. Earle; flowers and fruit. Messrs. C. S. McDonald and Wren ; vegetables, seeds, &<?., Messrs. Ryburn and Gunsen ; implements, Messrs. Wallace and Belcher ; shoeing match, Messrs. A. Harris and C. Hanken. The special trains from Auckland and Waikato brought large numbers to the grounds, and shortly after ten o'clock the judging of exhibits commenced, and by noon the greater number of the awards were made. In tho principal features of the show—horses, cattle, sheep, and pigs—there was not such a representation ;is could be wished for. In dairy manufactures, especially butter, there was a tine exhibition, but in bacon and hams the display was small, and cheese was only represented by one exhibit. It was in fruit and vegetables that the strength of the show lay, and the exhibits were largely supplemented by a magnificent display of apples exhibited by Mr. Beloe, of the Linwood nursery, Pukekohe. These exhibits, which were not for competition, comprised 120 plates of superb apples, many of which are new varieties. Mr. Thomas had a well-dis-played exhibition of locally manufactured jams, made up in glass iars of various sizes in attractive forms; and Mrs. C. Shipherd had also a splendid show in this line. Amongst other extra exhibits were samples of ensilage, which smclled very strongly, and which was pronounced very good. The vegetable class was well represented in all its varieties in large growths. Fruits other than apples, such as lemons, pears, plums, etc., were well represented, and in many respects the exhibits of vegetables, such as pumpkins, tomatoes, kumeras, potatoes, and cabbages were splendid of their kind, and Mr. Hillman had some superb grapes on ' view. A feature worth noticing was a sample of dried apples exhibited by Mr. Wilson, of Wairoa, and some blackberry juice exhibited by Mr. Smith, of Pokeno. The former was highly commended by the judges, and the latter was commended as it might be useful. Mr. H. H. Smith exhibited colonial ovens, Messrs. Porter and Co, a patent churn, and Mr. Hillman's display of pot plants greatly aaded to the attractiveness of the long shed which had* beon erected in lieu of the circular tent which has hitherto done duty. There were several protests, which had to be dealt with by the stewards, but with the exception of some which remain over for consideration, the following are the awards : — PRIZE LIST.
