VOLUNTEER INTELLIGENCE.

"o" BATTERY V. H.M.S. DART. An interesting friendly rifle match took place on Saturday afternoon, at the Mount Eden Range, between teams of eight men a-side, from H.M.s. Dart and the "O" Battery, and despite the fact that the wind and dust were such as to militate against brilliant scores, a very enjoyable afternoon was spent. The conditions of the match were ten shots at 200, 300, and 500 yards, and as the teams were armed with different arms, it was arranged five shots from each. The Snider ammunition used was Whitney's recent issue, which was found all that could be wished for, and gave general satisfaction. The captain was on the ground himself, and as Sergeant Allom, of the Battery team, was unfortunately disabled, it was at once agreed that Captain Whitney, being an honorary member, should fire in his stead. Lieutenant Gedge was in charge of the Dart, and Lieutenant James of the Battery, the best possible feeling prevailing during the match, the defeated team taking their beating with good humour, and the teams giving cheers for each other at the conclusion of the match, which as will be seen below, resulted in a win for the "0" Battery by 72 points : —

"A " BATTERY V. CITY GUARDS.

This match, which has been looked forward to for some time past, took place at the Mount Eden Rifle Range on Saturday afternoon. The ranges were 200, 300, and 500 yards, 7 shots at each distance, 15 men aside. The day was not) altogether favourable for shooting, there being a strong right wind, which increased as the day advanced, and at times the light was very queer. As will be seen from the scores appended, the "A " Battery won by the substantial majority of 103, or an average of almost 7 points a man for 15 men. Leaving 200 yards the battery were leading by 37 points, at 300 yards they gained 30 glints, and at 500 yards 36 points. Capfc. ohn was in charge of the Guards, and at the conclusion of the match called for three cheers for the "A" Battery, which was heartily responded to by the winning team at the call of Lieut. Haultain, who was in charge of the "A " Battery. The following are the scores:—
