«> —■ —> [BY TELEGBAPH.—OWN COKRESPONDENTS.] Cambridge, Friday. The unhappy victims of the prosecution under the Tobacco Act, paid the penalty of £4 9s each to-day. The road from Cambridge to Taupo ie in a shocking condition on the section between Paeroa and Waotu, owing to the number of sheep lately travelling this road. The sand from cuttings and sidelines in several dangerous places has covered the road to a depth of three feet, consequently laden waggons coming down the road are aptrto slide bodily sideways over the bank into the river. From Waotu to Cambridge is only 32 miles, yet it took D. Bruce, with a good team, two days and a portion of one night to accomplish the journey, and more than once he had to take the horses from one leader to scoop out a channel on the high side of the road for his off-wheels to run in. At the R.M. Court to-day, before Captain •Jackson, R.M., the greater part day was taken with the case Joseph Keeley v. T. and J. Hall and F. Reynolds, insulting language, etc. Mr. Dyer for the plaintiff, and Sir W. Wasteney for the defendants. A | cross-action was also brought by T. Hall j against Joseph Keely for assault. The evidence was conflicting in the extreme, and the cases were at length adjourned until the next sitting of the Court. The quarterly meeting of the Licensing Committee was held to-day at noon. Present : Messrs. Webber (chairman), Halley, Ferguson, Bond, and Dr. Moon. The only business was the hearing of the application of U. EL White for the transfer of the Masonic Hotel license to E. L. Hope. There being no objection, and the police report being favourable, the application was granted. TkAhoha, Friday. There are a large number of acceptances for the several events at to-morrow's races. The weather is superb, and everything looks promising for a good day's sport.
