THE PBEMIEB AT THE THAMES.

H> : . ■ [by telegraph.— CORRESPONDENT.] Thames, Monday. The Premier arrived this afternoon acomputtied by Mr. Cadman, M.H.R., and was met at the wharf by the Mayor and Town Clerk. At half-past three he was interviewed by Mr. Carpenter, Chairman of the Harbour Board, regarding the financial position of the Board. It was explained that m January next the £6000 borrowed by the Board from the local Friendly Societies would become due, and in consequence of the recent curtailment by the Government of the port of Thames, the Board had been somewhat hampered. Mr. Carpenter suggested that when the matter was brought before the House next session provision should be made for meeting this either by assistance or loan. It was further asked whether the Government would grant the Board power to raise a loan for harbour improvements, and especially for sheet-piling the Kauaer»nga Channel. In reply the Premier requested that a minute should be drawn up on the Board's requirements, and forwarded to the Government, when it would receive every consideration. Colonel Fraser, M.H.R., also waited upon the Premier re the County Council obtaining a vote of £30 from the Government for a track up the Alabama Creek, as promised by the Hon. Mr. Richardson when here. The Premier made a note of the matter. Colonel Fraser said there were no other deputations. It was felt that the present Government was adverse to the Thames, and especially as regards the promises made from time to time in reference to the railway, which were still unfulfilled. The Premier leaves here to-morrow morning, for Paeroa by coach, and from thence will proceed to Katikati and Tauranga by buggy. Mr. Cadman will go as far as Paeroa, and then proceed to Auckland via Te Aroha.
