The election of a new Harbour Board, such as that which took place yesterdays does not signify so much as it

would have done a few years ago, when loans were floating and expenditure was larger. Retrenchment has been the order of the day with this corpora, tion as well as with other bodies to whom were granted borrowing powers by, the Legislature, but although the pruning-hook has been used strenuous]! there is still a large and important J sponsibility placed on the Harbour Board, and the.election of yesterdav was watched with keen anxiety morp perhaps by the shipping men than amongst the corporations -who an pointed members to represent them The chief interest, therefore, centred ui the election which took place at the Harbour Board offices. There were six candidates for three seats, and th« choice of the electors fell on Mr. C P Stone, Captain H. F. Anderson and Mr. George Winstone. . These gentle men are fairly representative of the constituency, which comprises ship. owners and payers of harbour dues' but a good many will regret that Hγ Thomas Henderson was defeated. i[ r ' Henderson had a large, almost an iiereditary claim on the shipping interests of Auckland, and as the local repr&. sentative of the Union Steamship Company he had a fair claim on the public" However, the ballot decided otherwise, and Mr. Henderson, who during h« term of office was a useful member of the Board, now retires. In the constitution of the Board t,he City Council members are important factors. There are four of them, and the only alteration in the representation this year will he the substitution of Mr. Crowther f ot Mr. Holland. Parnell has elected Cap. tain McKenzie as representative of that borough instead of Mr. 'Winks. Birken. head and Northcote have re-elected Mr. C. E. Button, and" Devonport has re-elected Mr. M. Niccol, the present chairman of the Harbour Board. There is therefore very little change in the personnel of the Board, Captain D. H. McKenzie, whose term as member for the open constituency ex. pirecl by effluxion of time, has been elected for Parnell borough, and Captain Anderson and Mr. Winstone will make useful members. The former is not new to the work, and Mr. Winstone's business habits and his large concern in maritime and mercantile affairs, will give him an interest in the aflhirs of the harbour. The. folio wing memhers now constitute the Board : —Shipowners and harbour dues payers : Messrs. C. B. Stone, H. F. Anderston, and George Winstone. City Council : Messrs. A. \ T. Devore (Mayor), Goldie, Dignan, and Crowther. Parnell: Mr. D. H. MeKenzie: Birkenheacl and Northcote: Mr. C. E. Button. Devonport: Mr. M, Niccol.
