THE GOLDFIELDS.

[by telegraph.—own correspondents.]

Thames, Thursday. Herald Battery.—Mr. Robert Comer has purchased this battery for the sum of £450. It is hie intention to utilise it for tho purpose of wholesale crushing from the face of the hill opposite the plant, which is a part of the old Kuranui Hill mine, new owned by himself. This part of the mine is a complete notwork of quartz stringers and small leaders, and it is thought that by treating them in u wholesale way, thoy can bo made to yield remunerative gold returns. Waiotahi.—There ia nothing fresh to report from this mine, all the stopee above Nos. 3 and 4 levels being manned as usual, and yielding a large quantity of fair grade crushing dirt. In the Mary Ann soction the manager is still engaged in forming a drive over the old tributers' stopes, but this work will bo completed in n, few days, and a start made to break out quartz. New Manukau. —Stoping operations are still proceeding upon Mulligan's leader above No. 4 lovel, and during the last day or two a little more gold than usual has been visible in the quartz broken, which inclines tho manager to think there is an improvement in the quality of the leader. On Monday last a couple of men were started to work at the old Golden Crown battery level to break out a trial crushing from some small leaders which a party of tributers worked profitably up to tho Manukau boundary. Nothing of importanco has yet come to hand. Saxon. —No. 1 break at No. 5 level was met with to-day. It will now bo necessary to crosscut 50 or 60 feet through blank country to again intersect tho reef, which work will be accomplished as speedily as possible A few pounds of picked stono came to hand to-day from stopes above No. 3 levoL Paeroa, Thursday. Karangahake Crown.—The machinery, ox Tainui, arrives here per Kotuku to-day, and will be Immediately carted out. Capt. Coward and Messrs. McGruer and Hutchinson are hard at work over preliminaries. Satisfaction is expressed in local mining circles at tho permanent engagement of Mr. McGruer, who had had the mine in his sole harge for the past five years.
