DISCOVERY OF TIN ORE.
''[BY TELEGKATH. —OWN COIIUESPONDENT.] Wellington, Wednesday. The Minister of Mines has been advised of A\q discovery of tin ore in Stewart Island ji a quantity likely to lead to the establish - iient of an important industry in that part )f the colony. The actual discovery is not •ecent, but the extent of it has only recently necome known. Many years ago a German named Longuet found a crystallised substance in several of the creeks and watercourses of Stewart Island which resembled garnets in bhe rough state. For a long time these substances were thought to bts garnets. Specimens were sent to Tasmania and to Professors Ulrich and Black, of Otago. It now turns out that the basis of these stones is the true peroxide of tin, and that claims have already been pegged off by persons informed of the true nature of the proepect. The discovery acquires a special importance just now from the stress laid upon the interest which the discovery in New Zealand of tin and nickel (in quantity) would create among the experts at the Paris Exhibition. Reference to this subject will be found in the evidence given by the I'rench Vice-Consul before the Mines Committee last session.
