THE GOLDFIELDS.

[FROM our own correspondent.]

tains a size of fully six feet, showing colours of gold, and has produced a few pounds of picked stone during tho last

day or two. Trenton.— manager of this mine has received instructions from the directors to report as to the advisability of commencing work from the Saxon shaft. This scheme if carried out would prove most advantageous to the company, and the general impression here is that it is likely bo be adopted. WAIOMO.

Paroquet.—Work in this mine is still suspended, pending the erection of the wire tramway. A trial run of the battery was made on Saturday last, when everything was found to run smoothly. Gem.—Crushing for this company is expected to be commenced at the Paroquet battery next week, and at least a payable return is anticipated. Operations in the mine are at present being carried on with a limited staff, which is owing to the uncertainty of the holding out of the present water supply in reducing the quartz already in hand. The prospects of tho mine, however, are still very good, gold being seen freely in the quartz at every breaking down. Ostrich. Two men are employed prospocting in this mine. A leader well charged with mineral has been found on the surface,

and a drive has been started to tost its value at a depth of about 25 feet. The Big Pump.— Mayor (Mr. Win, Carpenter) has given notice to move at the next meeting of the Council, that the Borough's contribution towards the sustenance of the Big Pump be increased from £10 per month to £20.
