THE WAINUI CHARTERED TO
CONVEY THEM TO APIA.
Press Association.—Electric Telegraph.—
Washington, January 14. . Admiral Kmberley, commanding the American corvette Triton, has been ordered (to proceed to Samoa, where it is feared trouble may arise in consequence of the dispute with Germany.
[BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington, Tuesday. The course of local and general politics was, to-day, suddenly arrested by the news that the 8.8. Wainui had been prevented from going upon her advertised trip to the West Coast, having been chartered by the German Consul. It was believed by some people that communication was to be held with Admiral Fairfax upon some matters of urgency, but it has transpired that the vessel has gone to Samoa with urgent cable despatches for the German Consul in Samoa from the Imperial German Government in Berlin.
There 13 a rumour that the Calliope is under orders for Samoa, but the rumour wants confirmation.
