ATHLETIC SPORTS, &c.

CRICKET. The first round of the senior cup matches was concluded on Saturday last, with the result that the Gordon C.C. lead, with United second, Auckland third, and Parnell fourth. Gordon have won 3 matches ; United 2 ; Auckland, 1 ; Parnell, 0. Two more rounds remain yet to be played before the question of the final supremacy of- the clubs will be decided, and the glorious uncertainty of the game is such that the present position of the teams may be quite reversed before the end »f the season.

Auckland United v. Parnell.—This match was concluded on Saturday. Parnell, with 31 runs to the good on the first innings, commenced their second innings. Crowe and Mills were the first batsmen, and hitting freely took the score to 46, when Crowe was bowled by McPherson, who had just gone in. Mills shortly after succumbed to the same bowler, and then a regular collapse followed, the batsmen being quite unable to play McPherson, who secured .wickets for 11 runs. The innings closed for 61, Parnell batting one man short. Crowe scored 23 and Mills 24. United, with 93 wanted to win, then commenced their second innings with Yates and Clayton. The latter, after scoring 3, was caught at the wicket, and Testro joined Yates. The pair, playing good cricket, remained at the wickets till the necessary runs were obtained, United thus winning by 9 wickets. Yates obtained 54 and Testro 33, both not out.

W. McArthub and Co. v. A. Clark and Sons. —The return match of the above club 3 was commenced last Saturday, and will be continued next Saturday. The principal scorers were: —G. Brown, 34, for W. McArthur and Co., and Smith, 24, and Jamieson, 12, for A. Clark and Sons. The total scores were : W. McArthur and Co., 83; A. _ Clark and Sons, 68. SWIMMING. Considerable interest is being manifested in the swimming carnival to be held under the auspices of the Auckland Amateur Swimmind Club, on Saturday next, at the Calliope Dock.
