London, January 13. The Tongariro sailed from Plymouth yesterday for Wellington. NEW ZEALAND PROPERTY TAX. London, January 14. The Financial News condemns the New Zealand system of taxation, contending that the property tax is injurious to the best interests of the colony, inasmuch as it tends to exclude British capital. THE GERMAN EAST AFRICAN CO. Berlin, January 14. In the Reichstag the Government ask for a vote of two million marks for the reinstatement of the German East African Company. Prince Bismarck will speak in favour of the scheme tomorrow.
BREACH OF PROMISE. London, January 14. An action for breach of promise of marriage, brought by Phyllis Broughton against Lord JDannan, will be heard shortly. GIFTS FROM THE POPE. London, January 14. The Pope has presented golden chalices to Cardinals Newman and Manning and Archbishop Eyre of Glasgow.
