EXTRAORDINARY ALLEGATIONS. Melbourne, January 5. At a meeting of the Royal Standard Investment Company, some extraordinary _ allegations were made against the direotors of the company. Mr. W. J. M. Larnach, of Dunedin, who occupies a seat on the Board, in a lengthy statement asserted that the directors had ex pended the sum of £320,000 in the purchase of properties from certain firms, and from themselves, at prices generally in excess of their value. A committee of enquiry was appointed. RESPONSIBLE GOVERNMENT. Perth, January 6. Lord Knutsford has cabled that he is willing to agree to a compromise in connection with the granting of responsible Government to Western Australia. He suggests that the Upper House should be nominated by His Excellency the Governor until the population has reached 60,000, or after the expiration of six years : if the number has not then been reached, that an elective Chamber ' be formed.
