The fall Manton sustained while running in the Auckland Cup has, I regret to say, turned out more serious than anticipated. The colt was out at exercise on Saturday, but moved very queerly, and it is, I understand, not at all certain that he will fulfil his engagement in the Derby. Very little wagering was done on Saturday over the events to be decided at Ellerslie, and speculation was almost altogether confined to the doubleAß.C. Handicap and Steeplechase Nelson, British Lion, and Lady Norah being the favourite selections for the first-named race, with Mangaohane for the latter event.

The forfeit (lOsovs) in connection with the Great Northern Derby must be declared and paid into the A.R.C. Office before noon to-day, or the nominator will be liable for the balance of the sweepstakes (24sovs). It has been arranged that the settling over the Auckland Racing Club's Summer Meeting will take place on Thursday next. The following musical selections will be played by Mr. Impey's band on the lawn at Ellerslie on New Year's Day and the day following New Year's Day : — New Year's Day.—Quick march, " Grand Manceuvres" (Desormes): overture, "Le Diademe" (Herman); valse, " Gondolier" (Roeder); selection, " Maritana" (Vincent Wallace): quadrille, " Les Yoleurs" (Bosisio); polka, " Repeat That" (Asch); valse, " Thalia" (May Ostlere); cavatina, Le Rosignol" (Reynolds); quick march, " Golden Love" (C. Godfrey); selection, " Notre Chere Alsace (H. Rling); valse, " The Mill Stream" (Lassere); gallop, "The Fairest of All" (Bowman); God Save the Queen." January 2.—Quick step, "Bridget Donahue •' (W. S. Ripley); overture, " Le Chevalier du Guet " (E. Reyloff); valse, "Tausend und Eine Naght" ("J. Strauss); selection, "Lurline" (Y. Wallace); quadrille, "Jollity ' (R. Dyke); andante and schottische, "Au Revoir" (Rollinson); valse " Paola, ■ (J. Rieder); aria, " Ugo Conte de Parigi," (Donizetti); march, "Rock barton " (J. Arbuckle); selection, "Falka" (Chassaigne); waltz, " Return of Spring " (F. Goetz); galop, " Fest Glooken" (Lindheim); "God Save the Queen."

SOUTH AUCKLAND RACING CLUB'S MEETING. j [by TELEGRAPH.OWN" CORRESPONDENT. ] Hamilton, Saturday. The day broke bright and clear, and there was almost as large a gathering to-day on the Claudelands racecourse as at its opening meeting a year ago. Many improvements to the course and the grandstand had been made since then, and, thanks to the committee and indefatigable secretary, Mr. G. H. Carter, not a hitch occurred to mar the general enjoyment. The Hamilton Band played during the day, and the races were run with punctuality, which . enabled the long programme to be got through in. fairly good time. The following aro the details of the racing:— Maiden Plate.—Forest King, 1; Success, 2. Forest King, Lucy Locket, and Kathleen ran. The start was not a good one. Forest King got the lead, and kept it all the way round. Success making but a poor second. Dividend, 14s. Handicap Hurdle —Larrikin, 1; "Patch, '2. Only two horses started. Patch refused at the first hurdle, and Larrikin had the race all to himself. 105 on totalisator; dividend, 12s. South Auckland Cup. — Haricot, 1 : Eruption, 2: Sir Walter, 3. Pretender and "Ernest also ran. They got well away together, and it was a capital race throughout. earing the straight Eruption and Haricot made the running hot-, and the former drawing ahead beat Eruption by a neck, the others being oloso up. Dividend, £12. Novel Race.—Grasshopper, 1; Parnell, 2; Billy, 3. Ten horses ran : Grasshopper, Mararoa, Liberator, Mosser, Parnell, Wilfred, Pussy Cat, Buggy Mare, and Tomboy. A good race between Liberator, Billy, and Grasshopper. Carey, however, held Grasshopper well in hand, and landed him a •winner by half a length. Dividend, £2 3s. Selling Hurdle Race—Wideawake, 1: Fisherbov, 2; Bob Sawyer, 3. Fairplay and Larrikin also ran. At second hurdle Larrikin came to grief, injuring his leg, I« airplay also fell at the same hurdle, rolling over his rider. Collins, and injuring him. The race then lay between Wideawake and Fisher Boy, Bob Sawyer making a bad third. Dividend, £3 12s. Dr. Kenny, who was on the course, attended to Collins, and found no bones broken, but that he was suffering from slight concussion of the brain. The winning horse, Wideawake, was knocked down for £13 to his owner. Tradesmen's Plate.—Sir Walter, 1 ; Signess, 2; Earnest, 3. Pretender also ran. Won easily. Dividend, £1 7s. Posy Race. —Black Jack, 1; Pansy, 2. Melody, Titbit, Robbie, and Violet also ran. Black Jack won easily. The Forced Handicap was won by Siguesa, and the Trotting Race by Fannie, Laddie being second. .. The racing was very good, and the atten- j dance about a thousand people. The privileges must have paid well, and the club will have come well out of the meeting. The j Victorian plan of usincj saddle cloths with the horse's number on either side was used, and gave great satisfaction to the general public. ■ - HAWKE'S BAY JOCKEY CLUB.
