HARBOUR BOARD SALARIES.

The question of salaries for the officers of the Harbour Board for the ensuing year came up for consideration at the Board meeting yesterday afternoon. It was first proposed that the salaries, with the exception of two, remain as they were in 1888; the exceptions being two assistant clerks increased from £85 and £65 to £10* and £75 respectively. The Mayor suggested that the matter be deferred till they had further information as to their next year's income and expenditure. The Chairman pointed out that the by-law provided that the salaries should be fixed in December. The Mayor said he could not see his way to vote in the dark for salaries. Mr. Goldik pointed out that many people were complaining bitterly of the Harbour Board rents, and many of these leaseholds might be thrown on their hands. This would reduce the Board's revenue.

The Mayor then moved as an amendment, " That before voting the salaries a detailed estimate of the receipts and expenditure for the ensuing year be submitted and sent round to the members of the Board." Mr. Goldie seconded this, but on putting it to the meeting it was lost, and the original motion—"that the salaries should be the same as for ISSS "was carried.

The Mayor then requested that his amendment be taken as an instruction to submit an estimate of the receipts and expenditure for the ensuing year as soon as possible. He was not in favour of reducing the salaries any more, but he certainly thought there were too many officers for the work they had to do. In the City Council fewer officers did more work. The request was agreed to. The following is the list of salaries in 1887 and 1888, the only alteration for 1889 being in office clerks (aj and (b), raised to £104 ana £75 respectively : — Salaries.
