Two hundred persons were present at the meeting to-day to discuss the question of the Pacific cable. Sir Oswald Smith (of Canada) moved, and Mr. Donatt (of Dalgetty and Co.) seconded, a resolution to the effect that, in view of the discontent with the Eastern Extension Company, the meeting pledges itself to support a cable by a Pacific route, via the Hervey, Fanning Islands, Samoa, Fiji, and New Zealand, provided the custom of the various Governments is given, and a guarantee extending over twenty-five years. The resolution was carried. It was announced that the company had determined to construct the cable whether a guarantee was given or not. The meeting was presided over by Lord Winchelsea. Many merchants and others were present. The motion in favour of the Vancouver cable was carried with enthusiasm. The promoters promised that the maximum charge should be four shillings per word, on condition that the. Government custom would amount to £75,000 a-year. Sydney, November 23. It is reported from Tonga that H.M.s. Egena has been ordered to survey the cable route from Suva to New Zealand. ______
