SAND-BINDING PLANTS.
A few weeks ago we drew the attention of our readers to the arrival of a quantity of roots of Arundo areuaria (Holland grass), which had come to Messrs. King, Walker, and Co., and was being distributed by thein gratuitously to those interested in its growth. Our readers have drawn very freely upon the kindness of Messrs. King, Walker, and Co. and the editor of the Californian Cackler, who forwarded the grass roots to Auckland. We learn that applications have come in from all parts of the colony, from Dunedin northward, and that applications are still coming in, though the roots were all distributed some time ago. It is to be hoped that those who have shown such a laudable anxiety to become possessed of this grass will also be equally faithful in sending us word of their success in the attempt to grow it here. Though the supply of roots is at present exhausted, Messrs. King, Walker, and Co., seeing the keen interest that was manifested in this grass, by the last outward mail steamer wrote to San Francisco making inquiry respecting a supply of these roots. If satisfactory terms can be arranged, no doubt a supply will be forthcoming, and in due time our readers will be informed of the result. In the meantime, those who have received roots of this grass should take the greatest possible care of them, and do what they can to secure their successful starting into growth. Once it takes a hold, it will soon spread, and thus means of distributing it Will exist within the colony. At present vigorous efforts are required to be taken to stop the spread of drifting sand which is spreading inland in too many places both in the North and South Islands.
