AUCKLAND CITY COUNCIL.

The Auckland City Council met yesterday evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr. Devore, in the chair), and Messrs. Davies, ' Warren, Trenwith, Farrell, Goldie, Atkin, i Crowther, Grey, Holland, Smith, Swales, . Evans, Dignan, Lavers, Hewson, and Pat- i terson. Mas. Sheasby's Claim.—Mr. W. Thome, , on behalf of Mrs. Sheasby, stated that that ( lady would accept £37 10* in settlement of the claim for compensation for damage to , her property in kelson-street. Friend wrote intimating . • that he had a scheme for the removal of the ( soil, which would be got rid of in such a manner as to cause absolutely no nuisance, : and if satisfactory terms were arranged, he I j was prepared to supply the necessary plant. ; ( Mr. Samuel White, representing a com- j ( pany, offered to provide a nightsoil depot j ■ just bevond Avondale for the term of from : , live to ten years. There was every probability of the company being able to arrange j with the present contractor, Mr. Casey, for , the balance of his contract. Mr. F. Langdon stated that it would take over £2000 to orect a factory and machinery for the disposal of the uightsoil in accordance with a scheme which he had previously mentioned to the Council. Messrs. Fairbrother and Campion, Carterton, wrote in respect of an earth closet system of which they were proprietors, and which had received the favourable consideration of the Wellington City Council. The letters were referred to the Legal Committee. Art Society's Room.Mr. J. L. Holland, secretary of the Auckland Society of Arts, wrote, asking that the members of the Auckland Athenaeum share the room in the Art Gallery occupied by the members of the former society. The letter was referred to the Library Committee. , Fire Brigade Service.—Mr. J. Cume, , NewtOn Borough clerk, forwarded a reso- ■ lution passed Dy the Council of that , borough, offering the sum of £40 per annum , as a retaining fee for the services of the j Karangahape Fire Brigade, in cases of fire j occurring within the borough, on _ certain ( conditions. The matter was remitted to } the Legal Committee. , Manuscripts in the Grey Collection. , —Mr. W. R. Cook wrote, requesting per- , mission to copy manuscripts in the Grey , collection in the Free Library, for public , libraries and Government institutions of | adjoining colonies. The authorities of ] these institutions would undoubtedly for- , ward in return duplicates of their art and . literary treasures. A letter from Sir George , Grey stated that he had no objection to the , manuscripts being copied by Mr. Cook. " The letter was referred to the Library , Committee. Map of the Colony.—Mr. H. N. " ar- , ner wrote offering for sale a map of the ( colony of New Zealand, very suitable for , the Free Library. The letter was referred , to the Library Committee. Wellesley-street.—Messrs. J. Pond and , Co. wrote requesting that Wellesley-street , be formed from Sale-street to Freeman's ' Bay. They had not access to their new premises. The letter was referred to the Ward members. Broken Metal. — The Hospital and Charitable Aid Board wrote offering 2s 6d per yard for certain broken metal. The letter was received. Change of Name.—Mr. Hewson presented a petition from the residents of Gaol Road, requesting that the name of that thoroughfare be changed to " Clifton Road." The Mayor said there was already a Clifton Road in the city. The petition was referred to the Ward members. Legal Committee.—This committee reported:—!. Letter.from P. Scarratt and others, re house in Liverpool-street: our committee has no recommendation to make. 2. Letter from Dr. Stock well (Health Officer), re cesspitt by law : Your committee recommend that draft of by-law, as amended, be approved. 3. Letter from Alexander C. Steele, re Nelson - street works (offer to settle claim for £50) : Your committee recommend that the Council adhere to its former offer. 4. Circular from the Education Department, re Sir W. Buller's " History of the Birds of New Zealand," 2 volumes, £10 10s: Your committee recommend that the same be purchased for the Library. The report was adopted. Tenders.—The following tenders were received :— Drainage works in O'NeillStreet : McSheffrey, £259 7s 6d ; H. Cummins, £229 15s 9d ; E. Murphy, £272 16s ; T. Regan, £280 ; O'Kiely, £243 10s 4d ;J. Cheyne, £243 15s 3d ; D. MacMahon, £220 Is 8d ; John Brodie, £234 5s 3d ; \V. Forrest, £269 Is. The question of private drainage having been considered by the Engineer, Mr. MacNlahon's tender was accepted. Repairs of cottages at Western Springs :S. Blomfield, £103 ; D. J. Davis, £84; R. Binn-, £97 10s ; J. Fury, £89 ; H. C. Small, £69 10s; R. Laing, £105. The estimate was £55. Mr. Small tender was accepted. Drainage works in Bruns-wick-street: H. Cummins, £19 17s 3d ; W. Bolton, £l6s 9s ; W. Forrest, £18 14s ; W. Camier, £19 Is 8d ; T. Regan, £18 ; Acton, Green, and Co., £18 16s lOd. E. Murphy, £20; T. Acton, £18 5s 7d. Mr. T. Regan's tender was the lowest, taking the subject of private drainage into consideration, and it was accordingly accepted. Leave of Absence.One months leave of absence was granted to Mr. Cooper, who is absent in Melbourne. Keubing and Channelling.—The Engineer submitted plans and specification for kerbing and channelling in Seafield View Road. • Annual Supplies. — The question of calling tenders for annual supplies was referred to the Streets Committee.
