THE SELECTION OF GOVERNORS.
LORD CARNARVON'S VIEWS, ACTION OF SIR HENRY PARKED ADDRESS TO THE QUEEN. THE QUEENSLAND DISPUTE. Press Association.—Electric Telegraph. — Copyriglit. Received November 21,1.37 a.m. 1 London, November 19. Lord Carnarvon, referring to the field of selection, hints that the authorities ought to choose Governors outside the groove of official service, and not contine themselves to the hard and fast lines of the Colonial Office. Sydney, November 20. Sir H. Parkes has given notice to move an address to the Queen, expressing the opinion that the gentlemen who may in future be appointed as Governors of the colonies should have experience of the conduct of public affairs, either in high political office or in the Imperial Parliament; further, that while disclaiming any wish to interfere with the functions of the Queen ! s advisers, it is thought advisable, reasonable, and in strict accord with the privileges Constitutionally conferred on Australian subjects, that the Government should be informed who is the person selected before he ia actually appointed. Adelaide, November 20. The Government has replied to Lord Knutsford, that if South Australia is conceded the privilege of stating objections to any nominee to the Governorship the power will be exercised with due appreciation of its importance, and no objections lightly made. The Government add that all difficulty would be obviated by the selection of men of wellknown reputation. It" Lord Knutsford desires, Ministers would be prepared to suggest for the considei ation of the Imperial authorities the names of a number of men whose appointment wouldbe acceptable to the colony. London, November 19. Baron de Worms in the Houi'.e of Commons denied that the settlement of the Queensland dispute was suspended in the absence of Lord Knutsford and Sir R. Herbert, the permanent Under-Secretary of the Colonial Offico. The Standard states it is probable' Sir H. Blake will be sent to Mauritius.
