CITY SCHOOLS COMMITTEE.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the above body was held in the Wellesley-stveet School yesterday evening. There were present: Messrs. W. Gome (in the chair), W. Crowther, Farroll, Ussher, MeMaster, Blades, and Dr. Walker. Tlie minutes of the last meeting having been read and continned, some minor matters in regard to teachers' absences were dealt with. A lengthy report from Mr. Small, the Truant Officer, concerning the irregularity of the attendance of some of the children at the Albert-street and other schools, was read. The Board of Education forwarded a memo, stating that Mr. Oeo. Hill, of the Wellesleystreet School, had been sent to Ngaruawahia during the sudden illness of the teacher. In reply to a request from Mr. J. Milne, secretary of the Rawlings Trust, the use of a room at the Wellesiey-street School to hold the examinations for the Rawlings scholarships was granted. The inspector s report of the recent examinations at the Wellesieystreet School was read. It showed that satisfactory work had been done save in the fourth standard. In Standard VI., 28 passed and 12 failed ; Standard V., 63 passed and 14 failed; Standard IV., 72 passed and 51 failed; Standard 111.. 117 passed and 29 failed; Standard 11., 99 passed, none failed; Standard 1., 92 passed, none failed. It was resolved that the headmaster be asked to state if he could afford any explanation of the unsatisfactory results in the fourth standard.
