THE SALARIES OF SCHOOL TEACHERS.
A COMPARATIVE STATEMENT. The Victorian Minister of Public Instruction has presented a return to the Legislative Assembly which contained a comparative statement of the salaries paid to teachers in Australia, Europe, Great Britain, and the United States. In Victoria a head male teacher's fixed salary ranges from £88 to £330, and in addition a sum equal to one-half of such salary is obtainable by way of results bv head teachers and assistants of all grades. Male assistants receive a minimum fixed salary of £88, and maximum of £208; the minimum salary of a female assistant is £64, and the maximum £216. In New South Wales the salary of a head teacher ranges from £96 to £400, with residence or fixed allowance therefor. The allowance for schools of the highest class is £100 per annum, and £20 for the lowest. Female teachers who are heads of departments receive from £192 to £300 per annum, with residence or fixed allowance of t26 per annum. Male assistants receive £150 to £250, and female £114 to £168. In Queensland the remuneration of male adult teachers varies from i6O to £500, and adult female teachers from £"20 to £372. In South Australia head teachers receive from £40 to £454; female, £30 to £251 ; and male as'sistants, £88 to £164; females, £68 to £131. In New Zealand head teachers are paid as follows Male, £15 to £480 per year; female, £12 to £294; assistants — male, £40 to £336; and female, £40 to £220. In Tasmania the salaries of head male teachers ranges between £73 and £500 per annum, and female £40 to £200. The salaries are very low in the Dominion of Canada; in Nova Scotia the maximum is £137 for males and £87 for females ; Prince Edward Island. £180 males and £72 females ; in Manitoba the average salary of a male teacher is £90 per annum rural and £224 city j female, £80 -ural and £110 city. In British Columbia salaries range from £120 to £204. In Quebec the average stands at £00 I per annum for males and £34 for females. I Ontario, males, £71 to £148; females, £49 12s to £60 4s. New Brunswick, males, £46 3d to £104 14s lOd: females, £45 8s 2d to £66 18s 3d. In the United States the minimum average remuneration of a male teacher is £48; maximum, £233 4s 9d ; female, £32 minimum and £152 7s 2d maximum. In England certificated masters receive from £50 to £300 per annum, and certificated mistresses £40 to £200. About 2.12 per cent, of these teachers receive over the maximum salary of £300, the average earning of Rasters, Doing £120 17s 6d and mistresses £74 is lid. In Scotland the average is £135 8s 3d for masters and £64 18s 9d for mistresses. Residences free of rent are provided for about _ a third of the total number of teachers in Scotland and England. The minimum salary in Ireland is £27, and the maximum £70, but teachers also receive school fees, result fees, and in some cases free residences and gardens. In France male and female teachers receive a minimum of £40 per annum and the maximum £112, assistants £40 to £80. The average salary of a teacher in country schools in Prussia is £47 14s and £69 18s 'in town schools, but, in addition, they receive small increments varying from £4 10s to £9 per annum. The average earnings of assistants are £2 7s in country schools, and £11 3s in town .-schools. In Berlin the salaries vary from £60 to £195, with quarters and increments. In Bavaria the salaries run from £17 4s t< £170, with increments after 10 years' service of £2 5s per annum every five years. In Saxony the remuneration varies from £27 t' i 59, with quarters, or lodging and finallowance; Wurtemburg, from £25 to £110 with quarters and fuel; Baden, £36 to £60 with residence, lodging, or allowance for all Duchy of Upper Austria. £54 to £81 ; Lowe Austria, £31 10s to £90; Hungary, £181' £72, with small increments, quarters or allow auce ; Belgium, £40 to £145 ss, with residence or allowance for all; Switzerland, £13 13s 7' to £128 10s 5d ; Italy, minimum £11 to £58 1: Sd, no maximum given; Spain, £25 to £120 with fees from scholars able to pay, quarters and small increments ; Portugal, minimum £10 Is 8d to £44 16s, with quarters and fees Holland, £16 His to £220 16s, with a right I quarters or allowance to head teachers : Denmark, £29 18s Id to £100 16s, with annual increments of £2 lljs to £5 12a; Norway, £13 8s '.Id to £173 12s ; Sweden, £28 for minimum, probable maximum payment not ascertainable ; Greece, £3 4s to £7 4s per month, with quarters and fees paid by parents able to pay. __
