NEWMARKET BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The Newmarket Borough Council met yesterday evening. The Mayor (Mr. W. Morgan) presided, and Messrs. Wyman, Spooner, Kent,- Lumpkin, Holmes, and Buck were also present. Mr. Maxwell, a newly-elected memoer of the Council, made the customary declaration and took his seat. Subsidy. —Mr. J. Sperrey, Property Tax Commissioner, reported having sent on a voucher for the payment of £112 7s, subsidy due to-the Council.Nuisance.—Mr. Reynolds, Town Clerk of Parnell, wrote calling attention to a nuisance caused by the depositing of refuse on an allotment in Ayr-street. The letter was received, as the Council were not concerned in the matter. Leaks in Waterpipes. — The Streets Committee reported having accepted Mr. Hendry's tender for. the stoppage of leaks in the street water mains.. Watertables. —It was recommended that those watertables which were in an especially bad condition be cleaned by contract. The consideration of this matter was deferred, pending the receipt of a report as to cost. Rating Act.—The resolution passed on the 18th October, referring to the enforcing of the clauses of the Rating Act within the borough, was confirmed. Balances.—The balances were : General account, debit, £353 15s 7d ; water-rate account, debit, £111 18s Id ; interest and sinking fund account, credit, £221 8s 2d; water loan account, credit, £24 lis 6d.
