The arrivals in port yesterday were confined to the usual coasting steamers. | About ■> a.m. the Northern S.S. Co.'s • Clansman returned from her weekly trip to ; the North, with a good number of passengers and the following articles of freight:—JlOtl sacks and 27 cases -/urn. 10 sacks fungus, 3 .sacks hides, 43 bales wool, s cases fish, M horses. The Clansman sailed again at 7 p.m. : for Tauranga. Early yesterday the schooner Sybil was hauled alongside the Queen-:-; reet Wharf ami the hatches were lifted, and the work of discharging her cargo of wheat begun. We received intelligence by wire from ! Waiwera, yesterday, at about 1.30 o'clock, j that a barque, inward bound, had been j sighted inside the Little Barrier, but up to ; nightfall no vessel had been signalled. The ' stranger is most likely to be the barque ' .Sharpshooter, with a cargo of raw sugar ; from Fiji. .She may be expected to arrive early to-day. From the local agent of the New Zealand Shipping Company we learn that the ship Salamanca has been placed on the New Zealand berth at London and is now loading forthis port. The outgoing mail steamer, the Mariposa, is expected to arrive from Svdney to-morrow und i.s fixed to take her departure for San Francisco at 2 p.m. on Monday. The s.s. lona returned from the Barrier ; yesterday morning, and after taking in cargo . •and embarking passengers, left for Mercury ' Bay at p.m. j Last night the Northern S.S. Co.'s favou- ; rite steamer Wellington took her departure : for Whangarei, with general cargo and pas- ! sengers. 1 Reports from Australia show that vessels j running between the old country and Auk- ! tralia still continue to experience very rough I Weather. The barque Victoria Nvanxa, from ; London to Brisbane, had a very rough pas- | sage. Very high seas were encount ned, and j the expedient of using oil bags to oaltn the ! waves was tried with great success. Two i seamen were washed overboard on the 19th instant by a heavy sea. Both were rescued in a much exhausted condition. The barque West Australia, fron London to Freemantle, also had a very trying experience, but of a different nature. On September 8, in lat. 'IO'IiO south, long. '18'4.> east, about 0 a.m., when it was blowing a N.E. gale, smoke was seen coming up the fore- i peak. An alarm was raised, and it was discovered that the coal stowed in the fore hatchway was on fire. The captain and crew eventually succeeded in getting the fire under, after having jettisoned about 40 tons of the cargo. The fire is supposed to have originated amongst the coal, and was due to spontaneous combustion. About 11 o'clock last night the s.s. Stormbird arrived from her round trip to the North and Whangarei with a number of passengers and a general cargo. When off Point Rodney the brigantine Cannlle, outward bound from the Thames, was spoken "all well " by the Stormbird. PORT OF ONEHUNGA. , ARRIVALS. Wanaka, s.s., Meads, from the South.— Union S.S.
