WAIKATO COUNTY COUNCIL.

[by telegraph.—owx correspondent.] Hamilton, Friday. At the Waikato County Council to-day there were present the chairman (Mr. Primrose), and Messrs. Barugh, Steele, Johnson, Forrest, and Smith. The draft of a new Bill, dealing with the furze question, which it is intended to introduce next session, was read and discussed. A very strong opinion against it was given by the Council, as being oppressive and unworkable. Mr. Steele brought up a report from the committee appointed to inspect the Peach Grove Reserve, the model farm and Agricultural School Endowment, and report as to the best means to be taken to utilise it. The report recommended that the boundary-fence be completed, with the exception ot that adjoining Coate's Road, at both ends of which gates will be erected, that all briars and gorse be grubbed out, and all other necessary clearing done so far as funds will permit, that levels be taken, and a main drain opened through the swamp. The committee stated that the improvements can be effected for a sum not exceeding £150 for the whole 137 acres, and were convinced that the property would then let readily at from £30 to £40 per annum for grazing purposes. Messrs. Forrest and Johnson strongly opposed the expenditure of county funds for such a purpose. The Chairman pointed out that it was the duty of the Council to utilise the land, now that the Government had vested it in them. It adjoined the Borough of Hamilton, was some of the richest land in the district, and the rent obtainable would not only pay interest on expenditure, but form a sinking fund to wipe out the latter. It was resolved to postpone consideration of the report, to enable councillors to visit the land and examine it for themselves.
