The ocean race between American liners •which had been looked forward to with so much interest turned out to be a very tame affair after all, the Umbria arriving off Queenstown no less than twenty-six hours ibefore her rival, the City of New York. As the victorious Cunarder took over six days and ten hours on the journey, it will be seen that neither for speed on the part of the winner nor " closeness'' at the finish was the contest in any way remarkable. This will be a disappointment to a great many people besides those who, on both sides of the Atlantic, have been betting their money on the estimated speed of these tine steamers. In London, comparatively little excitement was aroused over the contest, but in New York, Liverpool, Glasgow, arid other ports in which the American trade concentrates, the question was for some days the one absorbing subject of conversation. .
