[press association.] Wanganui, Wednesday. At the Supreme Court criminal sessions this day C. S. Wedge and Thomas Henwood were charged with larceny. Mr. S. T. Fitzherbert prosecuted for the Crown, and the prisoners were undefended. The jury returned a verdict of guilty, and His Honor sentenced Wedge, who had other convictions against him, to two years' hard labour, and Henwood to one year's hard labour. This closed the criminal sittings. Mr. Somerville has received word that the Union Company return passages for the rifle representatives to Melbourne will be reduced to £13 10s. Wellington, Wednesday. Mr. Edmunds, scenic artist, who has been engaged by the Opera House Company to paint the drop-scene and stock scenery for the new Opera House, has arrived from Melbourne, and will, with his assistants, at once commence work. The new Opera House will be opened on December 17th. The Wellington Caledonian Society report shows a balance of £'213. The question of renewing the scholarships term, which has just expired, was adjourned. The Society is to be incorporated. Mr. T. Kennedy Macdonald has been elected president. A boy named William Sayers fell out of a boat on the Hutt River yesterday afternoon and was drowned. Ciiristchurch, Wednesday. The body of Matthew George, one of the two fishermen drowned in Lake Ellesmere on October 5, was found in the Lake, near Irwell, to-day. J. W. Heath, shoemaker, Rangiora, died suddenly this morning, aged 70. He at one time served in the army, and held medals for Afghan war of 1839. Dunedin, Wednesday. The Royal Humane Society's medal was presented to-night at the City Council to Jas. Cannon, who rescued Miss Jeffreys at Ocean Beach, after a young man, John McCutchen, had been drowned in an attempt. The presentation was made by Mr. Fish, M.H.R.
