DUNEDIN OATS. October 17.—The demand during the week has not been very brisk, chief./ owing to the Australian market being more th-m fully supplied with the heavy shipments lately arriving from New Zealand, and consequently ottering lets inducement fur speculation. At the same time, a moderate business is being done for shipment coastwise, also for local requirements. There are at the moment no indications of any immediate improvement, but it is quite possible, considering the small stocks on hand, that further on higher prices may be obtained. Stout bright milling, Is 2Jd to 2s 3d ; best feed, 2s 1W ; medium, Is 9d to 2s (ex store, sacks weighed in, |d extra, f.0.b., Dunedin). JOHNSON CATTLE MARKET Messrs. Freeman R. Jackson A Co. report on Wednesday (by telegraph):—About the usual number of fat cattle came forward for the day's sale. Beef was of fair quality, and made from 14s tid to 15s the 1001b. The sheep pens were all full, one special line of grand wethers, fattened by Mr. G. S. Robertson, of Waireka, Wanganui, topped the market for shorn sheep, after keen competition. Lambs were larger and better than last week's entry. They sold at improved prices Pics were in the usual supply, and sold well. Cattle : Bullocks brought from £5 10s to £0 7s (id ; the different line averaged £6 3e 3d, £6 Is 4d, and £5 IDs 4u. Veal: Calves, lis 9d to 17s. Sheep : Wethers in wool, 15s 9d to 16s tkl ; shorn wethers, 10s 3d to 12s 6d ; lambs, 8s 3d to 8s lOd ; pigs, baconers, 35s to 63s ; porkers, 16s to 27s ; small, 8s 9d to 12s.

WAIRARAPA STOCK AND PRODUCE MARKETS. Messrs. Lowes and lorns' Report.—All sales during the week have been well attended, and prices for all kinds of live stock firm, with a tendency to advance. Produce remains at last week's quotations. Cattle have been in good demand, and all yarded found purchasers at good figures, a fact due to the abundance of grass and the encouraging returns from beef sent to the London market. In beef, bullocks of good quality ranged from £5 10s to £6, or equal to 15s per 1001b; and cow beef a trifle less. All good quality fat heifers sold readily. At our last sale the yards were well tilled with store cattle, all selling. Forward bullocks made from 80s to 85s ; good conditioned 3-year-old steers ranged from 60s to 70s; 2-year-olds, 50s ; yearlings, 28s to 30s. Calves from 14s ; spayed heifers made 40s to 455; store cows, according to age and condition, from 3Us to 40s. In sheep the entries were good, being chiefly fat wethers, ewes, and lambs, with a few pens of hoggets. Fat wethers in the wool did not go beyond 14s, being only of medium quality. Ewes and lambs, 9s to 12s ; small store wethers, 9s Cd to lis 6d ; hog. gets, good, 10s; medium, 9s ; weakly, 7s tid. In pigs the entries were again limited, being confined to a few lots of suckers, weaners, and small porkers, the figures being 7s (id, 9s (id, and 12s respectively. Horses still remain a drug, and out of some twenty enteredof all classes only about half-a-dozen changed hands. Good farm draughts reached £10; light harness, £10 to £12; hacks, ordinary, from £6 to £9 ; old crocks, difficult to quit, at prices from £2. In wool, hides, skins, and tallow no change has taken place, but sales have been free, and prices firm Grass seeds, with the splendid showery spring weather, have gone off freely, but prices are at previous quotations—: Cocksfoot, 3jd per lb; ryegrass, 2s 6d per bushel. Oats remain firm at 2s 6d to 2s 6d, but only small parcels are being placed. I'oultry has been in good demand, all coining forward selling freely. FowLs fetched 2s to 2s (id ; ducks, 3s to 3s 3d ; turkeys, (is. Potatoes have not advanced beyond £5, new potatoes coming into the market. Bran, chaff, and carrots are quiet, not much selling. Sales of furniture have been well attended, hut business in this line has been very dull. All crops and new grass are looking well, and shorn wethers are putting on condition rapidly. A large number will be in the market shortly.

SYDNEY. Messrs. Goldsbrougii, Moiit, and Co. report, on the lOtli instant:—At our second wool sale of the season, held on the sth instant, we offered S.S4 bales and sold 5H4. There was a large attendance of buyers, and good competition, especially for the better qualities. Good average greasy sold to Sd, and };ood scoured to 17i«l per lb. To-day we offered 1417 bales and sold 1017. The attendance of buyers was again large, and competition vigorous, to a point leaving a bare margin on latest London rates. None of the wools submitted were in more than average condition, and most of them, particularly

the western clip, showed evidence of the late Tinfavourable season. Greasy sold from 5d to 9Jd, lambs 4jd to 9d, pieces 4£d to Okl, scoured skin wool lOd to 14d.
