A tragic incident occurred at the Queen's Hospital, Birmingham, lately. For the past three weeks a hawker, named Street., had been under treatment in the institution for self-inflicted wounds in connection with an attempt to murder his wife and daughter, and during the time he has been in the hospital a constable has been watching him night and day. On Wednesday night, while the nuree was attending a patient in another part of the ward, which is partitioned oft", the constable was left in sole charge. Street asked him to fetch a little water, and the policeman unsuspectingly went to fetch a bottle which etood ten yards away. Street instantly jumped out of bed and rushed from the room. The constable immediately went in pursuit down the stairs,when Street, finding that his pursuer was gaining on him, threw himself over ehe balustrade and fell with a dreadful thud upon the stone floor 20ft. below.
