TABLEAUX AT OTAHUHU.

Or/B Otahuhu correspondent writes :—During the last few weeks the young people of Otahuhu have been kept in a high state of excitement by the preparations for the " Tableaux'' which were given in the Otahuhu Public Hall on Thursday evening, the proceeds being devoted to the school funds in connection with Holy Trinity Church. The undertaking proved to be an entire success in every way, as the performance and management were excellent, and the entertainment deserved the crowded house which witnessed it, and reflected great credit upon all the young ladies who worked so energetically in its preparation. Without being invidious, special mention might be made of Miss Bowden and Miss Gould. Mr. J. Fairburn presided during the evening, and at the close returned thanks for the support which was go liberally afforded. The following is the programme, and every item was received enthusiastically by the large audience :—Solo, piano, " Massa's in the Cold Ground " (Pape), which was tastefully rendered by Miss Law; tableaux, " The Old Woman in the Shoe." A very pretty and highly amusing scene. Aα immense shoe, fourteen feet in length, behind, in front, upon and at the side of which were children, and seated in the foreground, Miss Bowden with one little malcontent over her knee, in the act of administering " the whipping and sending to bed." On this occasion, Mr. C. Macdonald acted as " Shoemaker." Song, "Good Company," Mr. F. Yonge; duett, " The May Bells," Misses Kimptou; tableaux, " Dresden China." Master Fairburn and Miss A. Yonge, very beautiful and remarkably realistic. Song, " The Englishman," Mr. J. Mitchell; whistling solo, "The Carnival of Venice," " Annie Laurie," and " The Mocking Bird," Miss Grey. This was a new departure in Otahuhu, aud proved as pleasing as it was novel, as Miss Grey was recalled again and again. Tableau, " The Seasons" : Miss Shepherd in the centre and elevated, represented the " Year," and round her Miss Day, Miss F. Bowden, Miss Macdonald, and Miss Garret— , ' Spring," " Summer," " Autumn," and l< Winter "—presented the trophies of the seasons. The limelight heightened the effect of this really beautiful and graceful group. Piano solo, " Swanee River," Miss Yonge. This young lady plays very nicely indeed. Tableau, "The May Queen." In thi3 piece the descriptive reading was given by Rev. E. H. Gulliver, and the Queen was very prettily represented by Miss Garret. Piano solo, " Festa." Mr. A. H. Shroff: character song, "The Three Old Maids of Lee," the Misses Gould and Miss Tonks. The transformation from youth to age was splendidly and ingeniously done by masks secured to the back of the young ladies' heads, and an apron back and front. Song, " Love Hail'a a Little Maid," Mies F. Bowden ; tableaux, " Tit for Tat." The " Maid at the Stile" in this piece was very prettily and daintily represented by Miss M. Warren, and the swain by Master L. Shepherd, the song being nicely sung by Miss F. Bowden. Song, "Jack's Yarn," Mr. F. Yonge; whistling solo, Miss Grey; tableaux, " Queen Catherine s Dream." This piece was the climax, and was taken part in by nearly the whole of the performers in the other tableaux. Lime-light effects were introduced. Miss Shroff made a dignified Queen, and as for the angels, I hardly know how to describe angels, never having seen one, but as represented they looked very beautiful all but the wings, which seemed rather unstable and not by any means feathery. The singing of " God Save the Queen terminated the entertainment.
