VOLUNTEER INTELLIGENCE.

CITY GUARDS AND DIAMOND. A friendly rifle match, arranged by Captain Kohn and the officers of the City Guards, took place yesterday between teams selected from the City Guards and one from H.M.s. Diamond, at the Mount Eden Rifle Range. The weather was not favourable for good shooting. The ranges were short, but the Martini-Henry rifles of the sailors proved the better weapons, and they scored a good win. The following are the scores :— DIAMOND TEAM. 200 yds. 300 yds. 500 yds. Tl. They had, of course, the advantage of superior weapons, but were at the disadvantage of having less opportunity for practice. The match was essentially a friendly one. A four-horse brake carried both teams to ho range, where the contest was conducted on the most amicable terms. In the evening the teams assembled at the Park Hotel at the invitation of the City Guards, and an excellent spread as laid by Mr. Kean, the landlord. Captain Kohn presided, and Lieutenant Dormer occupied the vice chair. The only formal toast proposed was that of "The Queen," and the meeting became a social. Songs were sung, recitations were given, and good wishes exchanged. Avery pleasant evening was passed, and we are sure both teams will entertain lively recollections of this friendly meeting between our city volunteers and naval visitors.

The " 0 " Battery of Artillery held their weekly drill in the Drillshed last night. There was a good attendance, Lieutenant Gilmore being in command, and the men were put through a course of musketry drill under his supervision. A contingent of the "A" Battery were also present, practising at dismounting the 9-pounders in view of the approaching entertainment in aid of the fund for sending the Auckland team of marksmen to Melbourne to compete at the Centennial shooting matches.
