THE GOLDFIELDS.

[BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Thames, Monday. Saxon. — About 18 feet of reef was broken down at No. 5 level to-day, hillward of the heave lately meb with. The reef ranged from 7 to 18 inches in size, and colours of gold were seen. The rise from this level was suspended to-day owing to deficient ventilation, but a winze will soon be sunk from No. 4 level to communicate with No. 5 level, some 60 feet ahead of present face. —Crushing for this company was commenced this eveninp , , there being about 20 loads to put through with 601bs picked stone. MINE MANAGERS' REPORTS. New Fearnought.—ln my previous report, I mentioned having intersected a leader lour inches in width. It is crossing the face at a long angle, and in consequence will have it in the drive for about eight feet. In examining the quartz broken down on Wednesday last strong colours of gold were observed. lam inclined to think the leader and stringers intersected are the reef, at present pinched up in the tight country. The crosscut is in a distance of 65 feet from the main drive. Trenton.—Woodhams gave up his contract for sinking the shaft on Wednesday last on account of the country coming in hard. Since then it has been carried on by the company with wages men. The contractors lost two shifts, which caused less to be sunk this week than it would have been if full time had been worked. Four feet have only been sunk during the week. The country is still hard in the bottom, but it is easier bored than it has been, and I think we will soon get a change for the better. ' i
