THE WAKATIPU IN A STORM. Sydney, October 7. Arrived, s.s. Wakatipu this morning from Wellington, after a stormy passage. On Monday night she experienced a terrific gale, which lasted the greater part of the voyage- The wheelhouse and promenade deck were partially smashed. A heavy sea broke; through the cabin deckhouse, and flooded the saloon, and other minor damage was done.

TIMBER DUTY IN QUEENSLAND. Brisbane, October 6. The Assembly lias agreed to the proposed duties on timber. They include Is 6d per 100 superficial feet on logs, and 3s per 100 feet on dressed scantlings.

The commission appointed to inquire into the working of the tramways find that extensive frauds have been perpetrated, but profess themselves unable to ascertain to what extent the revenue has suffered.
