[press association.] PROPERTY TAX IN TASMANIA. Hobart, October 6. The Council has passed the property tax and rejected the absentee tax.

THE WAKATIPU IN A STORM. Sydney, October 7. Arrived, s.s. Wakatipu this morning from Wellington, after a stormy passage. On Monday night she experienced a terrific gale, which lasted the greater part of the voyage- The wheelhouse and promenade deck were partially smashed. A heavy sea broke; through the cabin deckhouse, and flooded the saloon, and other minor damage was done.

UNIVERSITY BOAT RACE. Melbourne, October 7. The Inter-University Boat Race was rowed yesterday, and was won by the Melbourne crew; Adelaide second, Sydney third.

TIMBER DUTY IN QUEENSLAND. Brisbane, October 6. The Assembly lias agreed to the proposed duties on timber. They include Is 6d per 100 superficial feet on logs, and 3s per 100 feet on dressed scantlings.

TRAMWAY FRAUDS IN SYDNEY, Sydney, October 6. The commission appointed to inquire into the working of the tramways find that extensive frauds have been perpetrated, but profess themselves unable to ascertain to what extent the revenue has suffered. Six conductors have been dismissed in consequence of the report.

TASMANIA AND NEW ZEALAND STOCK. Hobart, October G. At a meeting of stockowners it was resolved that it is desirable, on condition that satisfactory arrangements are made by the New Zealand Government for enforcing quarantine, that the present prohibitory quarantine be considerably relaxed for cattle imported from New Zealand.

STRIKES IN AUSTRALIA. Brisbane, October 6. The miners at Waterton colliery have struck for an increase of wages. Sydney. October 6. The carpenters in the city have struck for increased pay. It is believed the strike will involve 3000 men.
