[press association.] CRUISERS FOR THE COLONIES. London, October 3. The cruisers for the Australian naval squadron will be launched in April, and fitted out by September. The Admiralty have expressed their willingness to keep the whole of them if the colonies are not satisfied with the ships. THE RECENT RAILWAY MYSTERY. London, October 4. McGill, who was arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the death of the man King, who was killed on the Midland Railway line, has been committed for trial.
GLADSTONE'S CORRESPONDENCE. London, October 4. It is stated that Mr. Gladstone is revising his public correspondence dealing with the leading events of his life, with a view to publishing it at an early date. THE EXPEDITION AGAINST THE AKAZAIS. Calcutta, October 4. A sharp skirmish has oaken place between the British troops to punish Colonel Battye's murderers, and the Akazais, and the latter were dispersed. THE USE OF CROWN COLONIES. London, October 4. The Pall Mall Gazette strongly opposes the annexation of Bechuanaland to the Cape, and urges that together with Western Australia it should be reserved as a Crown colony to relieve Great Britain of her surplus population. SHIPPING. London, October 3. The barque Trevelyan, bound for Dunedin, is posted as overdue.
