Thomas Kennedy Macdonald has retired from the contest for the Mayoralty, on the grounds that as a leaseholder under the Harbour Board, he would be unable to take a seat on the Board, of which the Mayor is, ex officio, a member. Chkistchurch, Thursday. John Lanton, one of the earliest settlers, died at Rangiora this morning, aged 79. He arrived here in 1851, and began farming at Rangiora 30 years ago. HoKrrtKA, Thursday. The Bank of New Zealand shipped 23400z of gold bullion, valued at £9360. The Mont d'Or washed up for 2660z, valued at £1023. A dividend of Is per share has been declared.

The calendar for the criminal sittings, which open on Monday, contains eleven cases against thirteen prisoners. There is one case of child murder, one forgery and uttering, three sheep-stealing, one horsestealing, one cattle-stealing, one larceny, one assault and robbery, one indecent assault, one demanding money with menaces. Donedin, Thursday. The first prize for honey at the Melbourne Exhibition, cabled as having been awarded to Moritzson and Hopkin, Dunedin, should have been credited to R. W. Hart, Winchmore Apiary, Ashburton, the other firm being merely agents. At a meeting at which Sir William Fox gave an address, it was decided to appoint a committee of ladies to consider the advisability and practicability of establishing Kindergarten schools. For the quarterly criminal sessions, on Monday, there are only four prisoners, the charges being sheep-stealing, malicious injury to property, forgery, and larceny (three charges). ____________
