NEWTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The Newton Borough Council held a special meeting yesterday evening. The Mayor of the borough (Mr. Ambury) presided, and Messrs. Rigg, Boyd, Donald, English, Faulder, WeLley, Cox, and Porter were also present. Clerk of Works.—Twenty-eight applications were received for the position of clerk of works, and a ballot was taken, Messrs. Robson, E. Buckley, Hobson, and S. Draffin, receiving the highest number of votes. A second ballot left Messrs. Draffin and Robson in, and at the final vote Mr. Robson was appointed to the office, his remuneration being fixed at 8s per day when employed. Water Supply. — The engineer, Mr. Vogan, reported that the cost of meter connections for the water supply was estimated at £53. The Chairman thought that this matter was in an unsatisfactory position. He understood that there would be no "extras" at all in regard to this contract. He certainly understood that the connections and valves—the estimated cost of which had just been submitted—were included in the contract. Mr. Boyd asked whether the valves could not be done without. The engineer said that if this was done the job would not be a satisfactory one. It was resolved, on the motion of the Mayor, " That the matter be referred to the engineer to ascertain whether one meter would be sufficient; whether the valves could be done without, and whether wooden instead of cast iron covers could be used for the meters."

The Abattoirs. —The Mayor read a letter he had received from the Mayor of Auckland, suggesting that a conference should be held between committees from the City Council and the Newton Borough Council in respect of the abattoir question. He (Mr. Ambury) had replied that he cordially agreed with the proposal. He now moved "That Messrs. Brown and Webley and the Mayor be a committee to meet the City Council committee." Mr. Boyd thought that six members should be be appointed, so that there be an equal number from each Council. After some discussion, the Mayor, and Messrs. Brown, Webley, Porter, Boyd, and Riggs were appointed the committee.
