Canterbury papers to hand contain some reference to the v.R.C. Derby candidate, Carbine. The Weekly Press states that Mr. O'Brien was last week offered £2000 for the colt, but that he refused to part with him at that price. The same paper states that it is quite on the cards that the son of Musket will fulfil his engagement in the Derby, though nothing is yet decided on the matter. The Canterbury Times states that Mr. O'Brien endeavoured to get 3000 to 300 in Melbourne about the colt for the race in question, but was unsuccessful. From the fact that the colt has since been backed, his fulfilling his engagement would appear to be very probable. [Since the above was written a telegram from Christchurch states that Carbine has been withdrawn from all his engagements at the at the C.J.C. Meeting, from which we may conclude that he will be tskcn to Australia.] Particulars of the Rosehill Meeting are now to hand. The Cup was won by Mr. J. Mayo's First Flaneur (Bst), Mr. Gannon's Touchstone (7st 41b) being second, and Mr. Kelso's Elsie (6st 81b) third. Keith, who started a warm favourite at 9 to 2, finished sixth. The Hobartville Plate (for two-year-olds) was won by Mr. Gannon's Merriment (by Maribyrnong— Happy Thought), who beat a field of sixteen.

J. Kean leaves for Napier to-morrow by the s.s. Tarawera, taking with him Escutcheon, Leopold, Cuirassier, and the two-year-old Corunna (by Musket— Moore).
