Meadows, the representative of a Lon. don produce firm, now on a visit to the colony in connection with the butter and cheese industry, has been in the district for the last four days, visiting the various butter factories at Waitara, Tikorangi, Ngaire, Manaia, and Opunake. He leaves by steamer for Auckland on Wednesday. Two men named Luxton, charged with obtaining goods under false pretences at Blenheim, were arrested yesterday fifteen miles inland of Stratford, where they were engaged felling bush with a party of bushmen.
Palmerston North, Saturday. The football match, Wellington v. Palmerston North, played here to-day, was won by Wellington 'by three tries to nil. Storey, Merlet, and Cooper scored. Christchcrch, Saturday. Late last night the Diocesan Synod, after a long debate, authorised the church property tax on a loan of £50,000. This settles the question as to whether debentureholders are to pay the tax.
